power steering pump, 1996 ej2.2 legacy

Recommended Posts

is it common for them to go bad ?  car has  115k,   steering is fine going straight but in reverse and turning feels weird, and maybe some dead spots,   i have not pin pointed the problem.

Anyone else have these symptoms ?  what was the fix ?  Thanks

No, they leak but, don't fail often.  Do you have an Automatic?

Is your AT TEMP light flashing 16 times after you start the car?

Search Torque Bind.

yes the car is auto.

no lights flashing,i added fliud and the steering got better it looks like it is leaking from the shaft and the  pulley is a little wobbly

can the pump be rebuilt or replace ?  thanks

used pump from a wreck will be fine - despite your symptoms, soob PS pumps are long-lasting. if your pump is bad - that's just bad luck.

they DO let air into the system past old o-rings or cracked hoses on occasion - if your fluid in the reservoir is bubbling/foaming while idling - that's bad.

yes,  i replaced the pump with a sooby pump from the JY,  for $40  and works like a champ

Also i bought this car for $350 it needed some TLC but only 115k miles

I had to replace head gaskets we are going on 1000 miles, so far the car is great

older cars, Subies included used Mercon for the PS system, for the most part.

Power Steering fluid is supposed to have a little more conditioner to help the O rings stay elastic longer. (Not worth it IMO)

Newer vehicles have more dedicated fluids, so one must follow the mfg recommendations.
