Sedan fwd I also have a 84 leone gl- automatic Sedan, that has been converted to a 4sp d/r 4wd. I would like to use as much of the running gear from the 4wd, to convert my GL-5 into 4wd.. What doesnt bolt in you just drill holes for and put bolts in or weld right on Remove the whole rear subframe assembly from the 4WD as one big unit. Do the same on the 2WD and then just swap them. Only holes you might have to drill back there are the outer 2 bolts on each side of the differential hanger (4 total). You'll notice 2 holes countersunk already there in the unibody where you need to drill; its a no brainer! The transmissions will directly swap also. Remeber to grab the shifter linkage bracket from the 4WD otherwise youll need to fabricate up a little bracket. You will also need the clutch and flywheel from the 4WD to bolt onto your 2WD engine. Since they are both sedans you will have the proper driveshaft. The center carier bearing can be mounted several ways. I flipped mine upside down and a friend welded it drieclty onto the unibody; works for me You could buy some L brackets, drill the holes you need (5/8" ID) and weld the brackets in; thus bolting the bearing housing to the body. I like this idea becuase if the driveshaft isnt exactly straight you can slot the holes in your bracket and slide the housing lef/right till its straight. Lastly you could drill holes all the way through the unibody and bolt the thing down with long bolts, big fender washers and lock nuts. While you are doing all this work might as well be installing a 3" lift kit at the same time! =) Good luck! ps: i dont know exactly what engines / transmissions we are dealing with here so this is just rough information I've gatherd from doing a 2WD > 4WD conversion on my '88 GL wagon. pls post more info if you need clarification in any area. You have EA81's so I'll copy a post that I made to someone else doing exactly what you are doing..... I've done the EA81 4WD swap, and I can say that I will never do it again. Too many problems. I've posted about it before, so here's one of my old posts: You can do it. The tranny tunnel on the 2WD manual's is REALLY small, and you will have to cut and beat to get even the 4 speed in. The five speed would be a nightmare from hell to fit into a 2WD manual tranny tunnel. I think the 2WD auto's were bigger - possibly. Even still - you will have to beat on it for a 5 speed. Possibly not for a 4 speed if it's an auto. I never did get mine right - I lifted it instead and solved the problem that way. The front struts are different, the sway bar is different, and the whole exhaust from the Y back is different. Here's a parts list I put together (more parts like the pedal assembly would be needed for an auto swap): 4WD gas tank 4WD rear torsion bar and trailing arms. Rear diff / diff hanger / diff hanger brackets Rear axles Rear drum brake assembly, and axle ends Driveline Transmission 4WD Rear exhaust heat shield (there's a cutout for the diff hanger bracket) Complete exhaust (at least from the Y pipe back) 4WD front struts 4WD front sway bar 4WD shifter, and shifter mount (welded in, but the welds can be drilled out) 4WD interior console's and boots (and their mounting brackets on the floorpan) All the nuts and bolts for all these parts If you have any detailed questions - PM me. GeneralDisorder Posted June 9, 2004 Share Posted June 9, 2004 Yes - the 5 speeds will bolt up. There's some modifications that are needed. Do a search and you will come up with lots of info. Ratios are very similar. The low range of the 5 speed's (except the RX D/R) is slightly lower than the 4 speed. But the difference in crawl ratio is small.
