unique installation spot?

Recommended Posts

Okay, i know that this question has been asked many times before tonight; but it has never been archived and i didnt see it in the first ten pages or so. I havent been on the board for about 7 months now, so i don't know if it has come up recently. If it has, and someone could direct me to the thread, that would be greatly apprecaited.

Okay,

So, With my trip computer being where it is, I have a feeling it will have to move. I'd rather not move it, but o well if I have to. What else? I think I remember that the speakers are coaxial, not two-way, so with a higher powered deck, I'll need to rewire, right? How big of a pain in the A** is that? I don't want any wires showing in the end. Now, I've never installed a "system", so I really don't know what to expect, but I can't imagine its very hard. I've got some 8" subs to put in and I'll have a 600 watt amp pushing them, I'm thinking this whould be the easiest part, just running wire to the right spot and under the carpet, am I wrong?

OR...

Is this such a pain that I should just pay someone to do it? I'd much rather not, but if that is the best option, how much should i expect to pay? I'm really skeptical of putting a lot of unnesscary money into this car as I'm not sure I'll have it in a few months. But i figure that since i have all the stuff, i might as well try and get it all installed. Any and all suggestions are extremely appreciated!!

Okay, now I was thinking about this the other day. I guess my first question is, can a car cd player be installed vertically?

B/c if it can, I thought that a cool spot for one ony my car would be in the little cubby right behind the e-brake lever. It looks like, with a little cutting, that it might fit. then I wouldn't have to mess with the dash.

Thanks

there are a couple of options for your deck. one is to try and find the faceplate kit that has a spot for your trip computer. another, which I did, is to find the faceplate kit for one with no tri[ computer and move your trip computer down to the lower cubby hole (which happens to be the factory spot on an 88-89 GL-10). If you move it, you just get the factory mounting stuff off an 88-89 GL-10 and it pops right in.. you just have to cut a hole in the back of the cubby for the wires.

Speaker wires.. fronts, you dont really need to do anything. Rear doors need new wires(although it doesn't have anything to do with coaxial or otherwise as stated above, its because subaru uses a silly common ground setup).. just run the wires under the door trim.

Pretty sure that the cubby between the seats isn't deep enought to accept a an aftermarket cd player even if you cut the bottom out. You might be able to make it fit but you'll probably have to modify the tranny tunnel. The easiest and cleanest install would be to use this dash kit:

You don't have to go the camo route tho, if you don't want to.

You can find them for sale here:

Here's how mine turned out:

Good luck!

If you really want a clean install, then do what I did. Remove the front and rear seats, and remove the trim around the edges that holds teh carpet down (You don't have to remove the carpet). Run the wires under the trim panel on the side, or under teh carpet between teh rocker panel and the door. If you are running more than about 50 watts to your speakers, I would recommend upgrading the wiring for the speakers, it is not that hard. I ran mine above the trim that is under the dash. I ran my speaker wires down the sides, and then I ran the power wire for my amp right down the middle of the car (It's easy to do with the seats out, just fish it under the carpet). I Think the stock door speakers are 5 1/2, I have 6 1/2s in the front of my turbowagon and I had to cut the door panel out, but the 5 1/2 or 5 1/4s I used in the rear bolted in.

As for teh trip computer, I dunno cuz I dopn't have one. I wonder if the 88-89 trip computer control panel would work in an 87, liek if it would hook up, cuz the 87 trip computer would be sideways... I don't think that 85-86 trip computers would work cuz they have the outside temperature gauge in teh dash, rather than in the trip computer.
