HI,

Just wondering if you guys do anything special as far as preventing rust.

I dont think anyone undercoats their cars anymore.

The salt tears up the vehicles underneath and the fenders and rockers.

My dad would put crude oil in a pump garden sprayer and spray the underside of his work vehicles and he claimed success.

Anyone else do this?     Have another  remedy you use?

Salt is the real killer. Under coating isn't done anymore. It was really made for sound deadening, not rust proofing. Your dad had the right idea of using oil as a barrier method  to prevent salt from getting into direct contact with steel to form rust. Just like how a condom works.

Washing the salt from the car helps a lot, but not too practical in the dead of winter when the temp is below freezing level.

I've been using Hammerite Waxoyl for many years.  Stops and prevents rust.  Great for areas that don't show.  Soaks into places you can't get to.

On my Loyale wagons, I noticed how the mud flaps and part of the fenders trap dirt and crud.  So I modified them to block the path stuff was getting in, and made sure there is a way for it to drain out.   On the newer models, watch out for plastic pieces that cover and "protect" areas near the bottom / wheel wells.  They hide the rust until its too late.

Depending on what you want to protect from rust, the best I've ever found is a product called Dynaflux 309. That product stops rust on everything and it's on all my bolts, frames, dampers, AYC/ACD pumps, etc. The color is grey but can be painted. I bought a case of 12 spray cans in the past for $160 (Canadian) which was including tax/shipping on Amazon.ca. Now it's about $240 for the same so about $20/can but well worth it regardless. Spray oil as your father did to keep costs down, but use the dynaflux for any valuable metal part..

Dynaflux produces a hard Zinc coating that will stop rust and protect all metal from corrosion.

It's equal to hot galvanizing.

I'm so glad I found this product. It really works, and if you have the $'s, do the total underside of your car.
