1984 bucking and kicking cutting out

Recommended Posts

Hi I have a 1984 dl 4 door sedan 1.6l ea 71 manual trans

When I bought the car it ran great for 2 trips to work it then began bucking and kicking while accelerating and cutting out completely then would be hard to restart.

I gave it a tune up cap rotor plugs air cleaner. Did not fix it changed both fuel filters and threw a fuel pump at it just for the hell of it. Still the same I've attempted to read the codes it had a code 13 one long blink 3 short at first but has changed to a code 33 3 long blinks 3 fast.

I'm not sure where to go now I believe I found the fuel pump relay under the passenger seat I've swapped them around didn't change anything it will start and idle for some time then will cutt off sudenly.

Was it run regularly before you got it, or sitting for years?

Check fuel delivery.

There might be a list of codes for that mode on here. If you can try to get a factory service manual (ebay, etc.)

Give it a 1 to 2 second shot of carb cleaner down the throat, and see if it fires momentarily. If it does, you have a lack of fuel problem.

Consider other electrical issues as well.  Tired high tension plug leads (coil to distributor lead as well)  can break down as they warm up / under load.

Also a failing coil can do this as well as it warms up ie sudden / intermittant  stopping - this could be the most likely reason as the way it stops suddenly.

Could be other distributor components as well ie loose low tension connections (if breaker type check gap /pitting and its condenser)

Had a similar issue with my 88 gl running a mutt ea81. Had a old disty with mechanical points failing. If you have mechanical points, try to get a condenser with it. Looks like half a AA batery on a wire. Replaced the points and it fired up just fine. Coil is another very likely issue if electrical. Next would be to check fuel delivery as already stated

Has a new coil and fuel pump was having trouble with key on for the fuel pump power but I wired around it with some relays it seems to run fine until it's warmed up now can cruise around for a bit then get up to about 30 mph and starts bucking and will shudder out and die then hard to restart

Is your catalytic converter old? You could loosen both sides of the exhaust just enough.... it will be loud but its worth checking. When mine went, I noticed that it started losening power over time, and then it bucked and died. It was hard to keep it going, gas to the floor.... barely made it out of traffic. The cat was glowing orange, so loosened the exhaust and drove it home. If you havent done yet, might be worth a try.
