i got a spare remote today off ebay, and i went to program it and i couldnt find the programming button under the dash. there was a small push-button which was not recessed in any kind of plastic (and i pushed it for 15 seconds and nothing happened) then theres a toggle switch, then theres a metal nub that doesnt seem to be a switch of any kind which i accidently broke the back off of. The piece i broke had 2 metal contacts that i tried bridging with a key for 15 seconds to see if that would do it, but nothing. looking at my alarm setup, there are abunch of wires which are electrical taped together suggesting to me that something was either replaced or ghetto-rigged. can someone who has the button tell me what color the wires running to it are and if possible send a picture of what the wires and swiches under the dash should look like, i work better with an actual photograph than an illustration in my owner's manual. im not sure if its an alpine system or what but i have a 99 outback impreza sport. so anyone who can point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I got one off of ebay for my 98 Legacy and had problems with finding the button too. It just didn't look like what I was expecting.

Anyways, I don't know if yours will be the same since the 98 alarm is different from the 99 and yours is an Impreza but here's what mine looks like. I can't get to the back of it to see the color of the wires but hopefully this will help.

My 97 Legacy OB has the same setup as FillG. I found the wires for the button. They are 2 BROWN wires, but don't know where they run. I too don't believe you'll have the same setup.

Sorry

found em! the connector that i broke was hooked up to two brown wires, which i then followed to find that one was cut. after reconnecting them it worked like a charm. Thanks alot! Eric.
