EA81 seems to be lacking a cyclinder

Recommended Posts

Just bought a rough little Brumby 91 model, thought the ignition leads were buggered but not the case. After replacing them it still runs rough at idle.

Very under powered I think, my other is a 3ltr Outback with sports transmission so bit hard to compare to a 1800.

No blow by

No smoke

Makes a wierd loud sucking noise when I remove one of the pipes connected to the air filter assembly.

No real popping noise at the exhaust

If I remove the plug leads one by one, one of them seems to make no difference.

I am thinking valve clearance or push rod issue, waiting for delivery of manual on disk

Had been used on a very small farm, never got out of first gear for the past three years.

Any thoughts?

Please!!

Sorry guys I thought I was in the right section, it says "newer generation 1990 to present" which I was thinking was a little strange?

There is no pulsing or blow by when the filler cap is off and running. Took the rocker cover off the suspect side and couldn't for the life of me remember how to set the tappets, have not done that since I sold my Kombi over ten years ago. Think I have that sorted now, thank god for Youtube.

Going to pick up a set of plugs today and maybe a compression tester.

Heres hoping it is nothing mechanical.

Thank you for all your input.

OK, here's a subtle test. If you ere to disable the ignition and crank the engine over - would it sound typical ; Rarr, Rarr,Rarr,Rarr,Rarr, etc,

OR, more like Rarr,Rarr,Rarr,REER,Rarr,Rarr,Rarr,REER? that would indicate low/no compression in one cylinder - possibly a burned valve?

anyway, compression test should find that as well.

Replaced the plugs and set the valve clearances "Badly" now have a tic, tic loose rocker, waiting for manual to arrive to enable me to set them properly.

Did a compression test, three are at 175 psi, one is at 160, hoping to nurse it for awhile before tearing the heads off, running very well now except for the loose rocker. Need to buy a timing light, been years since I needed one of those.

Question again, can only find listings for front drive shaft boot kits, need to replace the outer on the rear are they the same?

Cheers
