91 to 83 Transmission Compatibility

Recommended Posts

Sorry I tried using the search bar and Google, but I can't find a direct answer. I have found a 1983 Leone turbo for sale for $400. It only has 106k original miles on It. It has a bad automatic transmission. I have a 91 loyale coming to me at the end of June I purchased for $70. (Yes a working driving loyale for $70 perfect body and interior) it has 300k on the motor and it burns oil. The The manual transmission was rebuilt or replaced 7k miles ago so it's practically new.

Long story short: will a manual transmission from a 1991 loyale w/ push button 4wd fit in a 1983 Leone with an automatic transmission w/ 4wd? Please and thank you!

Ps.

None of this "use the search bar" stuff. I did. And googled.

I know they fit mix match 86 through 93, if they have ea82 engines. I am not sure about 83s. The flywheel is different between at and manual. There may be a difference in driveshaft length, in which case you would have to swap that also.

Thanks guys! One last question. On the 83 Leone, he said the transmission wants to start off in 3rd gear. My girlfriend said that it would be awesome if I could fix the auto tranny and let her drive it in the winter since it's 4wd.

Thanks for the info GeneralDisorder. I'll drop the trans out of the high milage loyale and slap it in. Get all the good body panels and put them on my "low" mileage loyale.

So what does that mean with the ratios being different? I'm sort or a back yard tinkerer. So this is all new to me.

I would at least attempt to repair the automatic.

Might be much simplier than a tranny swap.

Could be something as simple as a brake band adjustment or leaking control valve gasket.

A lot of parts ARE still available.

My own 1984 turbo automatic still works well and I certainly don`t baby it.

I like the automatic around town.Torque multiplication from the torque convertor is

very useful in stop and go driving.

Mine will spin the tires in a slightly low traction situation.

As naru said it might be worth attempting to fix it. I run one behind an EJ22 and have for several years so with the correct maintenance they do work. 2-3 band adjustment and governor clean and smooth are the 2 things that will make it live the longest. Try the simple things first then replace it with the 5 speed it that is what you want. I have had a complete 5 speed setup waiting to be installed when the 3at fails, but it is still going strong.

My 84 3at kept chewing up governor gears.  the drive gear in the trans is shot.

So I removed the Governor valve body from the governor main body.  I installed a plate with a groove that allows full pressure to 3rd gear. (full open flow between the 2 ports)

Now I can drive by selecting 1,2 or D with the shifter.  Although sometimes if I really need 1st, I need to let it idle in "N" first for a while then shift quickly to 1st.

annoying, but functional and easy to fabricate at home.  Just need a plate with 2 holes for bolts and a groove for fluid to pass between governor ports.

It's worth noting that a 3AT from a 4wd loyal would be a nearly direct bolt in.  Swap rear diff to 3.9 to match but all else would be direct whereas a 5spd swap involves a lot more (clutch pedal and cable, wiring of 4wd solenoids, mounting carrier bearing, shifter, crossmember, etc....)
