I recently bought a subaru legacy sedan (yr 2000) with a 2.5 4-cylinder and 5-speed. I am interested in the specifics of it's awd system. I understand the differences between limited slip vs viscous differentials and stuff, but am unsure of what my car has or where it has it :)

 

Im assuming it has at least one viscous type differential between the front and rear wheels, but is there anything to protect me if my entire right side gets stuck on ice (or in mud, etc)?

 

Thanks for the info, I love this car so far- learned to drive manual in it without squeeking the tires/spinning out once!

Your car has a viscous center differential to split the torque 50/50 from front to rear, but two open differentials on the axles. So if both right or both left wheels start slipping, you might get stuck. There may be some fancy brakework or something with the e-brake that might get you free depending on how stuck you get though.
