The front Ujoint died in my Subaru while in the middle of moving from Colorado to Oregon. Is there anyone in the area (or within a 100 mile radius) that has a known good 2 piece rear driveshaft for a 1987 GL-10 turbo full time 4WD D/R 5 speed sedan? Or does anyone know of a shop in the vicinity that knows how to convert the ujoints to replaceable ones? Failing all else, which donor car driveshafts would fit? Can I just remove the driveshaft and lock the center differential and drive in front wheel drive, or will the transmission/transfer case fluid leak out? Please respond ASAP as I am supposed to be at work tomorrow in Portland, Oregon.

Good question. Not sure if tranny fluid will leak out, but i dont think it would hurt to drive the car in FWD mode.

Might also want to manually put the car into FWD mode by removing that fuse under the hood.

the closest subie folks on the board would be Pocatello, or Provo. either one is a bit of a drive still from evanston. Couple hours at least. Lumpc1 is in Pocatello and Bratcrazy is in Provo I believe..... Driving it in 2X2 should be fine as far as I know.. I blew both front boots in the vail pass last may and still drove all the way to st louis, mo. on them with out any problems..(although I was nervous..!) Good luck.

The pulling the fuse is only for automatic transmissions.

If you pull the shaft out of the transmission and continue to drive, it will leak especially going up a hill. Is the bad joint broken or just making noise. If it's just making noise you can probably pull both axles from the rear diff and lock the center diff. It will still make noise but have almost no load on the bad joint. Also if it's a bad joint between the carrier bearing and rear diff, you might be able to remove that portion of the drive line. If you go looking for a replacement, any EA82 driveline will work.

My older brother also has a good friend (or should i say best friend) that works in a auto shop in Afton. Also my little brother was just given an 84 wagon that i am sure he would let you use if you dropped it off with me in oregon, if you needed it. Give me a call, as there are lots of things that i could do to help get you rolling again.

Edit: on more thing, if anyone on the board has a drive shaft that could be sent out, it could be sent to my mom's address (also in Afton WY) and picked up there. Let me know if i can help out, cause it is not a problem for me.

OK guys, let think about what he is saying. He has a Fulltime 4WD D/R 5speed, the u-joint went out. He has to lock center lock differential, or he can't drive it in FWD. If the front u-joint is bad enought gone, pull the front yoke off the driveline and insert it into the tranny to keep the fuilds in the tranny. The car needs to be haul on a trailer or a flat bed, you can not tow these cars.

Donor car?? Any EA82 series car will a manual tranny (I think the auto driveline will work, but I'm not 100% sure).

Sorry to hear about your trouble.
I have a driveline and would glady ship it out Monday morning. Tell me what you can pay for it and where to ship it and it's your.
Your GL-10 has Full Time 4WD with Dual Range? That's rare, generally just available in the RX. Sounds like a nice car.

dude I have two of those drivelines one Eric gave me when i bought the brat and the 5 speed and one in an '85 wagon in my front yard if ya get to pocatello give me a call 237-9305. I don't think you're gonna make it to work in Portland tomorrow But I don't think you wanna be on the other side of the hill either unless you can buy a day or two, I think Evanstan is 150- 200 miles from me. :eek: 8o :smokin:

I'm sorry to hear your having troubles, but I'm not in Provo. I am in southern Utah, 2 hrs. east of Cedar city. I wish I was closer to help you out. There is one (and I think the only one in Utah) pick-a-part in Salt Lake City, just off of the (I-15).

Sorry to hear you're having troubles. Just a comment here, if you have AAA road coverage, they will tow up to 100 miles which will get you have way there, or at least to a more suitable place to repair your car. The 10 miles of towing available on your car's insurance is useless once you're west of the overcrowded east coast. At $70 per year, AAA is worth 4 tows if you need them.

Sorry, temperarily robbing your post. A 5 speed D/R Full Time 4WD with center lock is not that uncommon in a GL-10 model from 87 to 89, they were uncommon in the DL and GL model though. The first 87 GL-10 that I ever saw had one in it, and stupid me, I didn't grab it (it was at the Everett PAP). When I realized what it was I went back to get it, butsomeone beat me to it.

I've had three '87 and '88 Full Time 4wd turbo 5 speed (2 wagons and 1 sedan) all single range. I've also seen many FT cars, all S/R except the RX's. The only exception is a couple of early '87, pre RX 3 dr coupes (owned one) with the F/T D/R. I always there could be one out there in a wagon, but have never seen one. Considering the number of Subaru's I've seen over the years (and viewed many with F/T 4wd), I would have to say that in the region I travel they are very very rare, if they exist at all.
The preceding is reflective of my personal experience.;)

Here where I live there are libraries (5 within 10 miles) with free internet access, maybe where you live too? (more vast experience with no value to the poor soul in need of help)

I've done this before in my 77 when the rear diff blew out. (Long story, involved an LSD, the rear tires spinning the wrong way, adn my friend not putting enough oil in the diff)
so since I had no rear diff, I just unbolted teh axle shafts, adn removed the drive shaft. I disassembled the front U joint and stuffed teh front yoke into the tranny, and secured it with some mechanic's wire.. Although stupid me is not thinking, and he can't do that since in locked mode the drive shaft is turning....

I *think* that the EA82 drive shafts come apart in the middle (Dunno, never looked at mine), if that's the case, take the rear section out and you're good to go. It'll make noise, but it won't be as bad as if it had a load on it.

Went to SLC Sunday and found one 86 Subaru Sedan at the U PULL IT on Redwood Road. Pulled the front half of the driveshaft the back half had rounded bolts and couldn't get it off. Took it in to the mechanic this morning Its the WRONG SIZE :mad: . The front half of the driveshaft measures about 28 1/2 inches in length from end to end. This is Tom's wife by the way I haven't let him know yet. The library was closed yesterday, so we couldn't check the post. Still trying to figure out what to do next. I'll go back to the RV Park and let him know I'm going to print out all posts to this point and take them too. I think we may need to drive my truck to Pocatello so If your on line. We don't have cell phone service here but as soon as we get into Utah our phones work again. (Figures) If you need to get to us send an email to me at Dawnchere1@yahoo.com. Boy, I don't understand that, <strong>ALL</strong> EA82 series cars use that same driveline, too bad you couldn't get the whole driveline, I'm sure it would have bolted in place.

Glenn, we are heading back into SLC in about 1/2 hour to try to find another driveshaft. If you can help "adjust" what we already have, that would be great. Right now, I have the front section from a 1986 4WD automatic and I have my complete driveshaft. The front U-joint right next to the front yoke is the damaged one. It looks like it is ready to separate. If you can call us in around 1/2 hour or email me your phone number (with area code), I can call you back and make arrangements to get together. Our cell phones don't work until somewhere after the Utah border. We have limited internet access from our phones, but about all we can do is receive and send email. We are going to head to Pocatello instead and get Lump16's (Dale's) driveshaft he's measured it and it fits.

You probably won't read this till you get to Lumpy's place, but I just check my parts book, and there is a manual driveline and an automatic driveline, slight differences between years, but they should interchange (auto to auto, and manual to manual).

Tom and Dawn just left my place with a good driveline. But SOB 400 mile round trip! there must have been a bunch of EA82 cars sitting in the fields along the way.anyway it's handled.:cool: :)
