Axle nut fell off 84 brat

Recommended Posts

So as the title says, my axle nut fell off.... I only got to drive this car around the block a few times after purchasing it, then the unexpected/expected happens and I think I broke my front right axle already! I left it at my friends house till I had the axle, went back out and upon looking I realized the axle had slipped out of the hub.... Some metal shavings here and there but I cranked the nut back on and my fwd works again, I figure I'm missing a few parts... Ive found a dorman part 05136 that shows a castle nut and a flat washer, but isn't there a conical washer that fits in there to really seat the wheel onto the axle/hub? I don't want to be wrong and have this axle seize in my hub going 60:/ PS I've had this car a month and never even got it home:'(

No cone shaped washer or spring washer under the nut, or the So I talked to oreiellys, then the dealership, they don't make the cone shaped washer anymore, luckily I found some offroad fabtech shop in Eugene that has a couple parts subarus, just gonna go all out and replace the hub, and bearings for good measure. Thanks guys.

That would do it.

The used parts should be fine.

I've found getting the cone washer off trick - use a piece of bar stock, about 1/4 by 3/8 - something about that size - as a punch, and a medium size hammer. Flat end of punch against the flat face of the cone washer, and a few stiff raps should pop it loose, without damaging it.

good call.  the hub was likely stripped out anyhow after the axle nut failing.

make sure the cone washer doesn't have a lip worn into the outer edge, thats generally the way to tell they are worn out.  ive filed a few down if lightly worn but if its really prominent dont use it. also the washer is directional and is marked.

the parts are called "Center Piece Axle" anytime I have found them at dealerships and such, maybe try searching that if you havent yet.  I can find them for my gen of subaru but dont see them for the brat.

anyone know offhand if they are the same between the models?

I'm pretty sure the cone washer was the same from at least 76 to 93, on old school models.  but it's been a long time since I had a 76 / 78 to double check on.  Never had a brat, but it would surprise me if they were different.

Legacy and up, I don't know.
