85 xt gl 20 turbo push button 4x4. Works! BUT Button Stuck

Recommended Posts

Does anyone here know how to take apart the pistol grip shifter on an 85 xt turbo? The four wheel works, the light works. Only problem is it’s almost like the old owner spilled a juice box in there and it won’t pop back out when I push it in. I’ve just been using a blade to wiggle it back up. Any pointers to get this taken apart? The holes on either side of it don’t unscrew, and neither does the one in the front. I don’t want to clean it with an alcohol swab and ruin something electrical. It’s thepistol-grip shifter with the interlock release button.

... I don’t want to clean it with an alcohol swab and ruin something electrical.

Computer's / Electronics Cleanser in Spray, is Safe to be used there.

An Example: ~► http://www.microcenter.com/product/363671/Contact_Cleaner

Disassembling the parts for cleansing is the idoneus way,

but it might remove the sticky gunk without disassembling.

Kind Regards.

Manual I assume? There is a little screw on the front that holds the button to the handle. I used a number 1 Phillips bit without a handle. It's not very tight. You can then pop the switch up just enough to work a qtip around in there. Don't force it up too far. I also took various grits of sand paper to remove some material from the button. If yours is like mine, some of the binding comes from the fact that the handle's rubber has lost some of its shape over the years.
