Any lazy arse tricks such as soak in keep for a week etc?

I hate cleaning these the usual way. Just stripping an ea81 from late 83, yet to hit 150 k km but sitting not good for it. Gonna split block and check rings

Three bent push rods for starters coz so.done tried to run it on ten year old fuel!,

My method over the years has been the combination of both suggestions, thanks gents. I also found the EA82 cam box sealant groove is beased cleaned up by soaking it in a thin pool of degreaser or kero, turps is good too

I used t use silicone sealnts for sumps but found I m usually the next poor bugger to pull sump or rocker cover off next time around - I wanna be able to get them off without severe distortion :D :D  Wasn't exactly RTV automotive, more "smuggled out of the joinery in the lunchbox"glazing silicone.

Had a guy doing that from our coin mint here, raised a few suspicions in a town cashing in shiny gold con for notes. Think the Monday at the bank was a few traders raising concerns this guy wearing Royal Australan Mint T shirt was up to no good. Cops soon found over 100,000 in $2 coins at his mums place, according to legend. He served time for that brilliant effort

soaked about two weeks upside down in a shallow bath of neat car wash detergent, softened stuff up nicely to assist a bench grinder wire wheel to buzz the dampened cork gasket off in just a few easy minutes. Best method ever, saved the fingers, no sharp blades or tools. Next one gona be the same
