EJ25 - What is this plug between oil pump, water pump, tensioner mount?

Hi All,

 

I'm getting into my son's 2002 Legacy GT with ordinary SOHC EJ25. It's been going through oil too quickly and the bottom of the oil pump is always wet so I'm in there to make sure the oil pump is sealed to the block properly, replace the pressure o-ring, and replace the front main seal to be sure. But there's a lot of oil around this plug in the picture, and I'm not sure what that is. I think the further-out plugs are for wrist pin access, but does this plug have oil pressure behind it?

I wouldn't call that oil seepage. Looks more to me like general engine dirtiness.

 

As for oil consumption - what is too much? These engines were notorious for leaking oil an/or coolant externally through the head gasket.

 

I would be looking for leaks on the engine if it's only losing a little bit of oil between changes. If you're having to top it up from the low mark several times between oil changes then there's most likely a bigger issue at play.

 

I would start with replacing the PCV and see if there is any change in oil consumption.

Replace oil pump with a 10mm pump. 

 

That is the wrist pin access hole. We seal them with copper washers and Loctite 545.

Supposed to be aluminum crush washer.  That is what Subaru uses.

We replace all the aluminium crush washers with copper. Wurth supplies all our hardware and we have all sizes of copper on hand in bulk. They work excellent and are cheaper.

Doesn't seem to be any issue with the factory banjo bolt crush washers for turbo and AVCS oil feed being copper against aluminium. Or the water banjo's for turbo coolant supply, etc. Or the brake banjo's on the 4 pot / 2 pot and Brembo aluminium calipers...... And we have never had one leak. 

 

Looks like a cost saving measure to me. Copper is expensive.
