Hi folks,

We got a 93 imprezza hatchback here. Automatic trans.

1.8L .

For the most part its great, but when we are driving on the

highway, sometimes it starts to make a noise that resembles

an old police car siren (goes from high to low pitch slowly).

We thought it was

the tape player first, but after turning that off, the noise continued.

I also noticed that if we stop the car for a few minutes, that the

noise would stop.... at least for a while.

The power steering makes no noise at all while turning it all the way

if that helps. Fluids are all good, I think.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thx,

Does the car have seperate amps on the backs of the speakers? Cause the bose ones in the infiniti went the other day and made a rising pitch noise, independant of the tape player/radio because the amps have their own power source. Turns out the capacitors dry out, so I have to solder new ones in. Dunno if it would be the same deal on your car.

If an electrical-induced noise, Why only on the highway?

I'm guessing wind related noise.

Chief culprits are roof rack cross bars, rear window dust deflectors, side-view mirrors, and general leaking around window gaskets at high speeds that cause large air pressure differences between the inside and outside of the car.

Try opening the windows a crack, bending your sideview mirrors in, etc. to see if these might be it.

If it IS the speakers, you could certainly hear the noise through the speakers - have someone in the rear seat stick their ear next to it when it starts to occur.

Good Luck, let us know what you find.
