90 legacy stalls has mind of its own ?????

Recommended Posts

Aloha from maui!!

priding myself as a good mech i have worked on everything from boats to

rockets to my recently gifted 90 legacy I am a certified diesel "mtu, cummins, man" mech ,sullair rotary air screw compressor, ird mechinalisys

etc I have worked on everything! you name it! but this 90 legacy is a menace

every time I started it its different some times from cold start I turn on the key

and both fans will run sometimes 1 sometimes none it dies stalls and feels

like clogged fuel filter check engine light comes on and off at will with different codes ive tested all the normal stuff the trans power light only comes on with

engine off, stalls even worse with ac button pressed and wont start again until

ac button is unpressed and seems to be better after high rev run for 5 or 10 min

then it goes back everything is new ex. coils and sensors, idles fine but stalls at idle or any other speed it feels like but when it does go it goes like a rocket

smooth no hesitation and then it feels like ign. or inj. cuting out and in and out will give more info as needed thank you mahalo from maui

acts the SAME hot or cold

What codes have come up? Have you tried to clear them and see what comes back? Have you run car in D-check mode? What trans computer codes are there?

I've got all the info on my site how to check codes, and use d-check, if you don't already know.

Did you correct all the emissions codes? If not, what are they.

Hard to tell from your description what's going on. How's the IAC? You might look up some existing posts for precautions and procedure to clean it up.

A couple of things, :

1. What's IAC? (I'm unfamiliar with the acronyms, I was a VW mechanic in the 1970's but not up to date on the lingo).

2. My '99 Legacy has been acting similarly, when first started it idles very low and a little rough, will stall at the first couple of lights or stop signs, then its ok. Subaru dealer did fuel injector service, replaced coil and dist. cap and a couple of wires, which took care of all the codes but no change on the initial problem. They replaced an O2 sensor and it SEEMS to be a little better (its stalled twice in a week and a half vs. every day). I've seen a couple of references to TPS sensors and possibly a factory recall for them but haven't been able to confirm it yet.

3. I have replace ALL FOUR wheel bearings in the past 20k miles (its got 149,000 on it). but the drive train whines loudly in lower gears. I wonder if this is old age, the Subaru dealer had it for week and test drove it a lot trying to dx the other problem and never commented on this noise.

Anyway I just found this site and this is my first post.

Sounds like the same thing happening to my 91 Legacy LS. See Rev n Stall on this board for similar discussion. Brake cleaner sprayed into the IAC valve may help. Good luck. IAC valve is electronic junction with smaller hose probably coming into engine on passenger side. It's going to be close to where main air intake clamps onto engine block.
