I just got an '05 Baja turbo and was told by the salesman to use subaru oil filters if I got the oil changed other places (like Jiffy Lube). Does that really make a difference? I change oil usually every 3000 to 4000 miles and use their stock filters with my other vehicles.

Subaru filters are just Puralotor filters.

If you care for your car you will NOT go to Jiffy Lube, Walmart, and etc. Do it yourself or go to a dealer or decent mechanic.

Ditto. And for the Price, the Subaru Filters usually aren't much more, and the dealer will use quality oil.

Yeah, I've heard a few horror stories of people having their oil change at Jiffy or any one of those quick oil change centers. Sometimes, the filter was never changed, whether it was unintentional or not, I'm not sure on that part. Other times, they forget to screw the cap back on. That's why I prefer to change the oil myself.

A buddy of mine worked at a Walmart auto center in Tampa, Florida and he'd tell me that they'd forget to drain oil and put 5 more quarts in on top of the old 5 or they'd drain transmission fluid and stuff. Sears seems to do it right...and dealers...but changing oil isn't to hard...but if you are in a hurry or etc. i'd suggest Sears or a dealer/good mechanic.

if you check on ebay sometimes you can get genuine subaru filters really cheap! I bought a bunch once and with shipping they were each less then a fram at walmart. Also, the factory filter that is on the engine is smaller then the one that you will use as a replacement...this freaked me out once and I thought I had the wrong filters....a call to the dealer made it all better.

For those who don't know...the orig. engine filter is small and looks like an auto trans filter. strange stuff in my opinion.

#1 read this: http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

#2 never, never, never use Fram or Penzoil oil filters (penzoil is fram)

How much is it now for a quickie oil change? $25 $30? Take a trip down to Wallie world (wal-mart) and get one of their generic oil filters... can't think of the brand, black box, they are made by purilator and are great fitlers for about $1.98... then walk down to the other end of the isle and pick up a 5 quart contaner of mobile 1 10-30 (or thicker or thinner depending on your climate) for about $20.... That's less then you pay for a quickie oil change and you can do it yourself. Check it every 3k and you don't have to change it for 10k (hell, redline originally said you can go 50k on their oil with normal fitler changes at 3k)... or call around and you can find a shop that will do it for you for around $10. You said you are running a turbo. With a turbo it's even more important to run a good full synthetic (red line, mobile1, etc) and a good oil filter.

If you don't believe synthetic is that much better check out redline's website. They compare their oil after 15k miles of use against brand new petrol based oil and still protect way better. Synthetic is the $h!t and it's sooo inexpensive now, espically when you realize you don't have to change it at 3k.

normal oil change 3k $25

" 6k $25

" 9k $25

" 12k $25

" 15k $25

" 18k $25

" 21k $25

_____

total $175

Synthetic Oil chg 3k $35 (20 for oil, 5 for filter and 10 for some1 to do it)

" 13k $35

" 23k $35

______

total $105

and if you want to anal you can change your filters every 3k if you like... at $2 each you can offset the cost by skipping starbucks one day a month. :D

Just a personal opinion, use a quality non-synthetic oil (I prefer Castrol GTX) for the first 10K miles or so before you go synthetic. Let the rings wear in first before you switch over. I've been doing my own oil changes for years now and drive what most people consider "beaters" but I usually don't replace them until I have over 250K miles on them. And then, it's usually because it's getting hard to find parts for them or I'm bored with it and have found something slightly newer. I currently own a '91 Legacy with 128K on it and I plan to keep it to 300K or more. I was changing oil religously every 2500 miles with a filter change every other oil change (only genuine Subaru filters). I got tired of changing the oil every two or three weeks (I have four other cars that I also do my own oil changes) so I've switched to Amsoil synthetic and change the oil and filter every 5k or 6k. Car seems to be happy about that. I generally buy my oil and filters by the case and the quantity discount is sufficient to keep me away from the low price stuff.

I stand by genuine subaru filters, also make sure to get the crush washers for the drain plug, alot of chain places will lose them (they like to fall into the oil drain pan) and then not put them back on. you would then have an oil leak and run the risk of running the engine dry if you arent paying attention. (my fiancee's co worker had Chevron change her oil and they left the washer off AND left the drainplug so loose I could crawl under and tighten OR loosen it by hand (like with my fingers!!)

It should be torqued to like 30 ft lbs.

It does kinda make you wonder why there are so many people that don't belive synthetic is better...

Everyone tells you "don't use synthetic until you hit 10k". I wondered why. Synthetic oils lube so well that your rings will not "seat". This is the process when breaking in a new engine where the rings form a tight seal to the cyl walls, what happens is the rings rub, metal on metal with slight oil film, on the cyl walls and wear away any imperfections in either the rings or the cyl walls to allow for a nice tight seal. If synthetic oils lube sooo well that ring seating may not happen then they obviously lube way better then std oil.

Funny thing about the old "beater" subies. My brother had a mid 80s one that slowly starting sounding like a diesel engine. He had it looked at by a few mechanics that all told him he needed a new engine. My brother the frugal king decided that he'd wait until it blew up then replace the engine. 100k miles later the main mechanic he took his cars to closed up shop. The new mechanic he found simply by listening to him drive up told him his oil pump was making that noise and he could fix it for $x. 2 subaru's later my brother still goes to that mechanic. :)

I use Purolator Pure One filters, one of the few with a synthetic filter element. This is helpful if you are looking for ectended drain intervals.

Pep Boys does a good job for oil changes, and I have a lot more confidence in them than the quick lube outfits.

Purolator One with the synthetic element... that's the same filter in the black box at Wal-Mart called a "super tech" for under $2.

You're gonna have to prove that one to me! Others say that these filters are made by Champion. One example is at:

http://www.lesabret.com/filters/filter.html

Not the same as Purolator One but seems to be a good filter for $2.

For a "generic" Purolator filter, the ProLine brand from Pep Boys is a Purolator Premium Plus rebadged. Same numbering system, too, unlike other generics that emulate the Fram numbers. Save a whopping 50 cents over the Purolator. I've used them a couple of times with good results.

Supposedly, the Total Grip brand from Advance Auto is Purolator too, but I looked at some the other day and the one that was supposedly a match for the L14460 Purolator was about an inch longer and the hole size, shape, number, and configuration was very different. It was also very different from the Fram, so who knows?

PureOne vs. Premium Plus: I've read many places that the P-1 filters more, but has less flow than the P+. However, according to Purolator's website, they both have a flow rate of 20-25 psi. So, I guess the extra $3 is worth it to get more filtration?

According to BITOG, the Wally World Supertech brand is made by Champion Labs and is the same as the STP filter.
