99obw Posted July 28, 2004 Share Posted July 28, 2004 Any parts store should have them. They should have different sizes for different size vehicles. Just ask for a small one. Be very careful when making the connections. Make sure you get the cooler plumbed in the return line from the radiator. Be aware that the mounting system they use can rub a hole in the radiator. I found it easier to leave the radiator part alone, then use an adapter (or just a hose) to link the two of them together. So, it goes like this: Hose from tranny goes into radiator, out (of the return port) into the new cooler, then out (from the cooler out port) into the tranny on the return hose. Got it for my wife's Nissan Maxima but haven't installed it yet--I refuse to "tie" it to the car's radiator. Am going to fabricate a support so it is freestanding in front of the rad. slo5oh Posted August 3, 2004 Share Posted August 3, 2004 I'm no novice, but I'm no expert either. Why does a subaru auto trans need a cooler? Are there problems with them overheating? 99obw Posted August 3, 2004 Share Posted August 3, 2004 Nearly all auto trannies can benefit from a cooler. Most cars run the fluid through a cooler integrated into the radiator, which limits the minimum tranny fluid temperature to approximately the coolant temperature. Auto trannies will last longer if the fluid is cooled to a lower temperature, and often during towing or heavy use the integrated cooler won't keep the fluid temperature low enough.
