Would the half shaft...

Recommended Posts

I just got back from some pretty cool speeding down gravel roads. WE've all done it, drift the corners...slide...just goof off.

Well, to the point. I have an 3AT(I know,i know.:-\) I was driving in 4wd, max speed was 40. For a total of about 25 minutes. Now when I take off from stop, normal take off, on pavement...my front end shutters and sounds like it is slipping. I noticed this before I commenced in this gravel mayhem. It was a small shutter...I thought maybe I just hit something in the road. But now it does it from stop, then when it goes from 1rst to 2nd and very little to 3rd.Could this be a worn out Half shaft? I checked the tranny fluid it was level.

Any and all comments welcomed. Thanks.

How much modification would need to be done for the EA82 5spd DR? I just know of the bell housing needing to be ground...is that the only thing that is added when going from EA81 to EA82 tranny?

Oh and GD i was in the process of posting that reuqest for a tranny as you posted your post.:drunk:

WTF!

I just started it up, let it warm up, checked the boots. It's all fine. Drove it around and it just does it's normal thing. Except the loud as hell exhaust leak...but that's another easy thing fixed.

Maybe the tranny just got a little warm and needed to cool down? Could it be the tranny filter...but the prior owner said he had $1200 of work put into the tranny. If that far fetched statement is true (why not just buy another Sube or two, or maybe a new/used tranny, but anyways) you'd think they would have replaced the filter...at least. So no problems with the tranny for now. But I am still interested in that D/R of EA81 or EA82. :headbang: THanks everyone for the help.

That's indicative of a bad DOJ - the symptoms tend to come and go as they please. Besides - front end vibration isn't caused by the transmission - it would either be the axles, or the wheels (loose lug nuts - improper balancing, etc). When they vibrate under load, it's usually the axle DOJ.

$1200 probably means the trans was rebuilt.... last I checked the going rate for Automatic trans overhaul was around $500 - but including removal and installation I could see $1200. Did they add an extra transmission cooler? If not, it would be a good idea to invest in one. Also have it flushed yearly and change the filter. Those EA81 autos are not known for reliability, but can be alright if you maintain them exceptionally well.

As for the 5 speed swap, it's not a direct bolt in, but if you are willing to make some linkage changes, it will go in alright. Since you don't have a flywheel anyway, I would sugest using the EA82 flywheel and clutch setup.... or if you are buying them new (a good idea), get the XT-6 flywheel and clutch. You also have to either fab up the EA82 two-peice driveline, or have a custom driveline made. There's some wireing too if you want the 4WD indicators to work right....

Hey if your lookin to do the conversion i was thinking the same thing awhile back. Lots of people have done it but here let me find a couple of the guides i got for it.

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2695

theres the one for makin a 4sdp m/t a 5spd m/t

And atm i cant find it but there was another post about changing a 3at to a 4spd.... so if u combine the 2 its basically how to make it a 5spd i guess... that was my plan anyways.
