coloradosubarules
This is my second post to the board and it is more like a cry for help. If you notice from my first post, I am leaking some oil from behind the timing cover (black plastic shroud in front of engine) and I can not figure out how to get the darn thing off. I used a socket but all it does is move and make a clicking sound. Is it stripped or seized up? Whats it going to take to get that off? What belts and pulleys have to come off to access it as well? Will I need a puller or any specialty tools? Thanks in advance. Greg coloradosubarules@yahoo.com
jcniest5
You mean you want to unbolt the pulley bolt so you can access the oil seal behind it?
coloradosubarules
Yeah...it just unbolts. SWEET!!!
jcniest5
Glad you are able to unbolt it! Good luck with the rest of it.
coloradosubarules
How do I get the Cover off though? Anybody else have this prob?
SevenSisters
On the 1st gen. at least, there are brass inserts in the plastic timing belt cover. The bolts sieze up in the brass inserts and strip them out of the plastic. That's why there are just turning. I think you'll have to pop them out. jcniest5
I think there are a bunch of bolts holding it in place. Just unbolt all of them and I thin the cover will come loose. I changed my timing awhile back but I don't remember exactly how I got the cover off.

coloradosubarules
to do the seals will I have to take any gears or timing belts off? They bolt on too?
jcniest5
Yeap, the timing gear slides out, if I can remember correctly. It's behind the gear if my memory serves me correctly.
