Hi,

 

This may be a long shot but what if the toothed wheel that triggers the cam sensor is the problem? I think the ECU would still set a "cam sensor" code because it doesn't see a trigger when it should. With the sensor out, rotate the engine and inspect the surface going by. Look for damage or anything that seems out of place.

 

A second possibility is that the gap between the sensor and wheel is too large (or too small). Check for debris that prevents the sensor from seating exactly where it should.

 

By the way, does this engine have two cam sensors or just one?

???? Is the 2000 Legacy a DOHC ???? If so there are 2 cam sensors. P0340 says cam sensor 1 on DOHC failed. This should be the one on the side with sparkplug #1 (Drivers side). P0345 is cam sensor 2, on the passenger side. (SOHC can ONLY get P0340).

Be sure the it is the proper sensor. There are 2 types that I am aware of, and they are NOT interchangable. They ALSO receive 12v from a seperate set of contacts on the MAIN Relay found in the relay box under the hood.

???? Is the 2000 Legacy a DOHC ???? If so there are 2 cam sensors.
There is only one cam sensor and that is on the left (drivers side) intake cam

P0340 says cam sensor 1 on DOHC failed. This should be the one on the side with sparkplug #1 (Drivers side).
#1 spark plug is on the passenger side front cylinder there is no cam sensor on that side
They ALSO receive 12v from a seperate set of contacts on the MAIN Relay found in the relay box under the hood.
The cam sensor generates it's own voltage which is read by the computer as a signal

You are correct if this is a SOHC. The manual however shows 2 cams sensors on the DOHC. Both in the rear of the engine (tranny side). It also has a picture showing plug 1 on the drivers side. These are Subaru Factory manuals.

That's why I asked about the engine. There are a few different types and sensors when it comes to the DOHC.

Also depending on the year and sensor used, some DO get a 12v input form a set of contacts in the MAIN Relay. Another reason I asked about the engine.

In this area the various versions of the SOHC is pretty much unchanged since it's introduction in the 90 legacy as a 2.2.

Has the timing belt been replaced? Or has it maybe "jumped"

Check the valve timing

Thanks for your reply. I replaced the timing belt yesterday but it still won't start. I'll check the valve timing though. Another concern I have about this "bad boy" is the fact that I discovered that the engine that is

in my legacy sedan AT is from a 2000 wagan with MT. I had a MT ECM in the car that was throwing several codes and running poorly. I got a AT ECM and

put that in only to end up with the no start situation I'm now in. I put the old

MT ECM back in but still no start. I'm wondering if the MT engine will ever be

compatible with the AT car that if is in now ???

Thanks for your reply ferret. The engine in my AT Legacy sedan is actually from a 2000 MT Legacy wagon. It is the SOHC engine. I just replaced the timing belt yesterday, thinking perhaps the belt had slipped, but still no start. I've tried both the MT ECM that came with the car when I bought it, and a AT ECM. The MT EMC run poorly throwing a bunch of codes like 1133,1139,0107, and others. When I put the AT ECM in it gave me the 0340 without even starting. I put the MT ECM back in and still no start with no codes. I wondering if it is even possible to use and MT engine in a

AT car with the varations in the ECM's ????

The A/T engine do use a different cam gear than a M/T engine

Also the crank gears (reluctor) is also different between engines

This is where you may be having some conflict with erroneous codes and the NO START situation

What I suggest is that you put everything back that was originally from the original motor (cam gear, crank gear. Intake manifold and engine wiring harness)

The problem with that is that we dont have access to the origninal motor. Are you sure the cam gears are diffrent? I know the crank gear has diffrent markings on the back but does it have a diffrent number of teeth? I ask because I went to subaru parts department the other day and started asking about the gears and they said that they are the same in a manual and an automatic..... Please help!

If it was built between Feb /1999 and Jun 2000 there is a difference between AT and MT engines on the cam sprocket

AT # 13019AA09B Cam sprocket

MT # 13019AA10B Cam sprocket

There is also a difference on the crank sprocket as well

AT # 13021AA16A Crank sprocket

MT # 13021AA17A Crank sprocket

As far as the engine you have in there now and when it was built is another story

What i would suggest is you take your VIN # in to your dealer and they can tell you if these are valid for your original engine( because there is overlap from Feb 2000 on where the cam gear does go to #13019AA09B for both AT and MT)

Thanks sea#3!!! I'm beginning to see some light at the end of this mess. You know more about this situation than the local Subaru tecks, that's for sure. I've ordered the crank sprocket for the AT and I was able to find the

vin# for the 2000 legacy wagon that my engine came from. If the cam sprocket is different for AT then I'll order that one as well. I'll put them in and use the AT ecm and I'm assuming (hoping) it will start. Then there may

be some other sensors that still won't be correct but I'll just have to deal with them as they arise. Thanks again. JK
