Hi,

I'm a Gen one 1989 GL owner and that car I know like the back of my hand but I tried out a 96 legacy today. Car looked and ran in neutral beautiful.

Old lady owns it. (Really)

When I test drove it the car kind of shuddered or bucked in all gears

under medium and hard Excelleration.

Anyone know of a problem where the transmission bucks under excelleration?

Could this be the all wheel drive kicking in and out?

Is this a common thing with an easy fix?

The car has 140.000 mi on it.

I could have bought it for 3 G's but that scared me off.

I've got a '98 outback that was experiencing what I think was the same bucking. When going down a hill or just quickly letting off the gas, it would buck and then settle down. Back on the gas, buck, the settle. All this with the clutch out. I replaced the gearbox mount yesterday, dozen nuts/bolts, 2hrs work, and it doesn't buck nearly as badly. Check out this mount. Might do the trick....

Thanks for answering my first post ever.

Sorry, I forgot to mention this ones an automatic.

It does it under excelleration no matter what gear.

Could be a mount I suppose. It's really a hard one to explain.

Like the transmission stumbles. If you step on the gas just right,

(I got it to do this in 1st gear) it's like a rumbling sound. In my small mind I'm thinking maybe it doesn't know whether to be in AWD or not. I'm also wondering if there is a switch or relay that goes bad and causes this, or is this what happens when a tranny is crapping out for good.

The thing that's bummin me is that where I live the small car dealers, especialy the ones that know Subarus gobble these cars up when they're cheap.

and sell them for book. I heard a tranny rebuild runs about $1000 for one of these cars.

Sounds a little like the problem we are having with our Saturn, the valve body is bad in our transmission. The transmission does not have to come out in the Saturn to replace it. I dont know about the Subaru. I think the cost to rebuild the whole transmisson would be much more than 1000.00 dollars, more like around 1800.00. Ours is bucking when we excellate mostly when going up a hill.

Just talked to friend how is the service manager at arundel ford.

First thing he told me is I should have driven the car more than a couple of miles. I'm going to go back and see if it's still there.

Here is something he told me that might help you too.

When the transmission shudders, it is very often due to the clutches getting glazed and this is very common with cars that old ladies or people that drive like old ladies have.

The first thing they do is flush the transmission and then they use an anti shudder additive that cleans the glaze off the clutches. He say's this most time fixes the problem and should be the first step for any reputable outfit

before they tell you that you need a tear down or rebuild. Just thought this might be of value to you.

I've had a few american automatics (GM turbo 350's) and if you don't know already, they are a bunch of thin disks that stack up (just like a motorcycle clutch)

Thanks for your reply, it prompted my Call to my freind.

Good luck with your Saturn.

I have to go look at the car again if it's still there.
