Iam almost positive i have a blown haed gasket, 91 ej22.

Well my moms 91 legacy wagon probley has a slight blown head gasket, at 196,000 miles and its not becasue of poor enginearing its becasue of detonation, latley a check engine light has come up and its been having some detantaion, for about 2 months now. The main reason it wasent fixed was becasue of how busy we have been. The symtoms are white smoke at start up untill it warms ups. No bubles in the radiator which i had to put about 20 ounces of water in today. No chocalte milk oil, and the spark plugs all look good and all look the same. But today to really check for the blown head gasket i took it on a paper rought, on a very hilliy area at slow sppeds, and sure enough about half a hour into it, the temp started to go up. It only went to alittle less than 3/4 the way up, i turned on the vent to high heat, and drove it around at a higher rate of speed about 30 mph it went back down to normal and went the rest of the way with out incident. So what do you think? Is it blown, and if it is its very small leak, maybe stop leak could fix it? How hard is it to change ive done timing belts and a couple head gaskets on other cars, so it hink i should be able to do it. Could i do it with the engine still in the car, or should i take it out to do it? Also how what gaskets beside the head gaskets should i replace while iam in there? I jsut did the timing belt around 10K ago so that should all be good. Thanks

It would seem that you may have a water pipe or intake manifold gasket leak, and a bad radiator. I recommend a leak down test on the engine and a radiator/cooling system pressure test be done to look for a coolant leak.

Also pull the codes on the car to find out why the CEL is on.

Hope fully, that would be really nice, but how would the water enter the engine, since its coming out the exhaust pipe. The radiator dosent leak fluid, thats the thing, and the car got hotter after i filled up the radiator. Ive checked around for hoses, but couldent find any bad ones.

I know legacy777 web page has info on how to check for codes on subies with obo1 does any one by chance have his web page book marked, i did but lost it in the reinstall of windows.

Thanks Shawn W. Does anyone else have a opinion on whats wrong?

Tomaro iam going to to a very extensive search for a radiator leak form any where.

Hey whats that thing that regulates idle and always fouls up and has radiator fluid going through it. Ive cleaned it before not on this car, maybe thats leaking fluid into the intake maniflod?
