What type of AWD does my car have?

About a month ago I bought a 1999 Impreza L (2.2 liter, auto transmission) with 36K miles. I've heard of all types of AWD and was just wondering what type mine had and how good it is.

I believe you have what's called an active AWD system. 90/10 torque split unless slippage occurs. I may be biased but it gotta be pretty good. It's a Subaru.:grin:

Can it vary between 90/10 and 50/50, or is it just one of those two?

 

I've driven it for a month, about 600 miles, and so far I haven't noticed it. I know you're not supposed to, but I just thought it would feel different.

Supposedly during acceleration it distributes more power to the rear, but normally it just 90/10. I don't think you can make it 50/50 all the time like the MT. Take it on a dirt road and accelerate through a curve. Believe me you'll feel it.

Sure ya can ... the AT is locked into a 50/50 split in first and second, so you're good to about fifty or sixty.

So up to 3rd gear, it's always 50/50? And after that it's 90/10, unless distribution is needed? Sounds expensive if anything goes wrong, good thing I have a 2 year warranty through Subaru.

 

The owners manual says it has passive steering, in that the rear wheels can tilt 2-3 degrees. I've never heard of this before, is it exclusive to Subaru and does it make a difference?

this is what i have gotten from all the stuff i have read... it is a 50/50 split all the time unless slipage or in a turn(ie. when taking a turn it shifts the power to the side wheels for better traction)... now this is for the standard tranny...

 

for auto... it is a 90/10 split... unless your accelerating straight in which it is a 50/50... same for turns and slipage as the standard...

 

as for the tilty thing... thats crazy cool...

I guess in a turn it makes sense for the outer wheels to get more power, but under any other circumstance, it would steer the car like a tank.

The left to right split on your car is handled by a standard passive open differential in the front and another in the rear (There's no active control over the left and right). Some Sube's have a limited slip diff in the rear, but I don't believe your Impreza does.

 

The active control is the engagement of the rears when slippage is detected in the fronts. As was mentioned by mtsmiths, the rears are locked in when the selector is in 1, not sure about 2 tho. (On my '02 Impreza it's only 1).

Hmmmmm. I got confused over all this while getting my '04 Impreza Outback Sport because of the different types Subaru uses on different models and transmissions.

 

I finally understood mine (with AT) to be Active AWD and nothing more, nothing less; meaning 45% front 55% rear power to wheels, normally, until a slippage is sensed and then changes to 50/50. No side to side changes.

All this time and I'm still confused (was doing searches for types of AWD info). Even read an old post telling how only one wheel each for front and back is actually "powered". How can that be? I don't know and I think I'll just be sitting on the sidelines waiting for official word of what AWD in my Impreza Outback Sport really is. ;)
