Fuel system problem? URGENT!!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I need your help, i've developed what i think is a fuel issue. Fairly regularly, and within the last week, while going doen the road, i'll be going smoothly, then the rpm's drop drasticly, and it kind of feels like i'm out of gas briefly, then it gets itself going again. I've changed the fuel filter, and added fuel system cleaner, which made it better briefly, now its getting steadily worse. Fuel Pump? Clogged injectors? I will add its a 94 Legacy Wagon, with around 250K Miles.

Please respond quickly, i really need to get this thing taken care of before Monday.

Thanks in advance,

Jared

First thing I'd suggest is replace the CEL bulb. You could be spitting in the wind and going a completely wrong direction. If the ECU can give you some info on where to look, why not use it.

My suggestion would be to check your MAF sensor. I had a very intermittant problem for over a year where I'd be driving along on the freeway and the car would just lose power. I'd put it in neutral and rev the engine to bring it back. Most of the time that would work. Some times it didn't. Also if I was just driving around town or low rpms, the car would usually just stall.

Cannonball,

Older models require the use of the CEL to flash and give up codes that way. They don't have a diagnostic test jack like OBDII vehicles have.

On my former Loyale the flashing light was not the CEL but was on the ECU box. Is this different with the first gen Legacy?

The 90 & 91 MY legacies had a flashing light on on the ECU, as well as the CEL in the dash. The 92-94 MY's did not have the light on the ECU, just the dash.

yes, only the CEL for code reading, although i have a plan to fix that, the fuel pump will go long before that light repair happens. also see my new thread, fuel pump symtoms and repair...thanks everybody

If you find the CEL light is really good but the light still doesn't work let me know. I have seen the IC go bad in the ECU that drives the light. The circuit makes a ground for the light when it is turned on. There is a replacement chip available to fix it.

thanks cougar, i'll keep that in mind, but i think the light is merely burned out, after being on for months due to a bad IAC valve. getting behind the dash to replace the light seems complicated, so heres my plan...i'll go to the JY, find the identical black male/female connectors used to pull codes w/ the CEL, trace the wires back as far as possible, and clip with as much length as possible. use these new leads as extensions by clipping them to thier corresponding connectors in my car, then wire in a new bulb and switch from radio shack, and, if all goes right, be able to pull codes with the touch of a button. ( i know this got away from the topic of this thread, but feedback anyway?)
