where should I take the audio feed for a seperate amplifier on a 92 legacy radio w/ tape? I was considering splicing off the rear speaker wires, but i know this isn't line level, and I wasn't sure how the amp would handle it. Any suggestions?

Well if the radio doesn't have preamp outputs, then that's your only option. You can get adapters:

but they're not as good as having a preamp output.

If you want to retain your factory deack but use your rear speakers output as the input on your amplifier, you have two choices.

1. Find an amp with speaker level imputs (high imput)

2. Go to wal-mart or radio shack and purchase a Line livel converter. They aren't expensive and will serve your purpous. Be sure to pick-up an RCA patch cable while you are there to run from your converter to the amp. I know for a fact that wal-mart sells an amp install kit for about $12.00 and it comes with all the wires and connectors you will need. (converter not included)

Hope this helps. (I am an MECP certified installer)

  • 2 weeks later...

The stock tape deck is out of a legacy, and is a great improvement over the Loyale's tapeless radio. It was also free. I am too cheap to burn cash on a headunit with lots of lights. My amp is a booster amp with equalizer that I found on the side of the road. It appears to have speaker level inputs, but they do nothin when hooked up to the speaker wires. The amp (only one channel, the other is shorted and now has the power transistors dissconnected) works with line level hooked up to its RCA connector. The whole system is verry low budget, with me making my own custom boxes out of 1/2" particle. It will kick arse and will not rattle like a cheap tin can. Thanks very much for the advise on the line level converters. How do they work and how well do they work?

It is basically a volume control. No matter how much you crank it up, it keeps it a a lower level that will not toast the line level inputs on an amp or EQ. I actually found one (very expensive one from when I was an installer) in my garage. You can have it if you pay the shipping. Shoot me an e-mail and we can set something up.

Hope this helps.

The passive ones (like the links I gave) work better with low-power head units, so they should be fine for what you've got.

I took the radio back out of the dash, and it has a circular type 13 pin one index connector. Posibly what i have heard refered to as DIN type? Could this be used as a source for line level? I assume that it was for a CD player to hook into, but I'm not sure. Could I feed the PS2 output into the radio amp this way? What actually runs around around on this plug? Sorry, I'm clueless as to the standardized setups of audio systems and have been using the poke it with the meter and see what hapens approach, which I feel may wreak havoc if used on this plug. I'm interested in the line level converter otherwise.

What signals run through the DIN cable? I can get a patch cable, cut it and splice in what I need if appropriate. This would make it easier to set up the audio feed for the PlayStation 2. If any Audio signals come back out of the DIN cable, then maybe I could use them to feed the amp? Thanks very much for your experienced advise.

Good luck getting a wiring diagram for that DIN plug. I think you are better off using the LLC. If you wish to run your PS2's audio out into your stereo, you might want to reconsider your head unit. I just bought a Panasonic MP3/CD/Sirius setup with remote for $125.00 and it has ext input for an additional audio source. If you do not want to go this route you could get an A/B switch from the shack that controls Audio components and use this to switch from the output of your deck to the output of your PS2. You would be left with a volumn (gain) dilema but this could be remedied with volume knob switches from the scack with some phono (RCA) ends attached to control the left and right channels. OR...You could buy an amp with a remote gain control that mounts to the dash and you could control the gain (volume) from the dash for the amp. I am just assuming you will be running an amp to power ALL your speakers. You could run 2 amps. (1) 4 channel amp for your mids and highs and (1) mono or stereo am with crossover for your lows (subs). I could go for a sub right now. A philly cheesesteak...:slobber: What was I saying? Oh yeah....keep me informed and I will help you anyway I can.

The amp i will run is a strange booster amp from maybe the 80's that has 4 speaker outputs, a fader knob, a volume knob, and an analog equalizer. Only half of it works right now, something shorted and melted the power transistors on the right channel and it tried to do the same thing to the replacements that I soldered in, to be diagnosed when I get the motivation and time. I'm going to hook up the speaker wires so that onepair feeds the woofers while the other feeds the midrange an tweeter through the crossover. This will let me use the fader to controll how much power goes to the woofer vs. the higher range speakers. I was thinking that I could put in two double throw switches, one left channel, one right, to switch the signal feeding the amp's RCA connectors from the rear radio speakers to the PS2 output. The headunit will still run th door speakers.
