sasquatch Posted October 7, 2004 Share Posted October 7, 2004 I noticed that my muffler is developing some cancer....that doesn't bode well for the rest of my piping hidden away in that shrouding. I recently had the headers off so I know they are in decent shape. Soooo....I was thinking of replacing the cats while I'm at it back to the tail pipe (I have over 200K so I figure they can't be very clear either). Can anyone tell me if there is anything keeping me from replacing the two cats under there with one high-flow cat? Where are the 02 sensors? Thanks. Cats are notoriously expensive and most states with emissions testing forbid replacement with anything but new parts. With 200k on the clock, do you want to drop $300+ into the exhaust? It runs through your engine gets transformed into sulphuric acid and on it's way out eats holes in your exhaust. The early signs of this are holes in your exhaust tips (the small pipe sections behind the mufflers) that doesn't bode well for the rest of my piping hidden away in that shrouding. Replacing the 2 cats with 1 would depend on the state you are in. I would call a local smog referee and ask. As for 02s it depends. If the car is too new (last couple years) it will have 4 O2s (at about $150 each), there should be 2 in front and 2 behind the cats. If the car is a couple years old or more you have 2 and they should be in front of the cats either in or behind the headers and they are much less expensive. If you love your car take it to a smog shop and tell them what you want, if you are low budget (like me) then watch your local papers, penny saver, etc, for a "parting out" ad on a car like yours and take the entire exhaust for $50. coloradosubarules Posted October 8, 2004 Share Posted October 8, 2004 It's my favorite half-man, half-ape.... I gutted the cat on my 90 legacy and let me tell you it sounds BAAAD! (not good bad) The problem you are going to run into is that the front cat is basically a giant "Y" pipe. You have the two manifolds that dump into the cat but only one pipe come out. Every place I called said they would have to use a universal cat and weld up some high-dollar fancy piping. Did I mention that the o2 is in the front cat. I hope this helps..
