EJ20D engine pics

This engine will be fitted to the Legacy once I've solved the injectors problems, as the (red) SOHC injector does not fit in the DOHC fuel rails (compare with grey DOHC injector). It will ron on the EJ20 SOHC engine wiring, sensors and ECU.

BTW, this is a normally aspirated EJ20 DOHC engine as used in the JDM Legacy VZ cars (MY89-93). It develops 150 hp at 6800 rpm and 127 lb-ft @ 5200 rpm. It has a Legacy EJ20 Turbo intake manifold, as I could not get the standard manifold with variable trajectory to work (intake length is controlled by the ECU).

This is the same engine I have seen at the Oshkosh, WI EAA Fly-in converted to aircraft service with a timing belt reduction. Produces much more usable power with greatly reduced vibration than the standard aircooled power by either Continental or Lycoming.

Ya gonna make it look pretty & shiny before ya put it in the car?

Really GREAT pix!

The injectors on the right look to be similar to the injectors that were on the 90-91 AT legacies.

Just swap fuel rails? I've got a set of the red injectors that are balanced & blueprinted. The caps & rails are probably different. When I get time I'm going to swap the entire rails.

I have a set of early (light grey) EJ22 injectors. They indeed look similar to the ones pictured here on the right and they would fit in the fuel rails alright.

Q: How does the flow rate of these early (light grey) EJ22 injectors compare to the later (red) EJ22 injectors (280cc, right Josh?)?

They're the same as far as I know. I think the grey may be 270cc. All info I have seen says they're the same for the red ones. There will probably be a 10 cc variance in flow between a set of injectors, but that's why it's good to get them balanced & blue printed.

OK. Started yesterday at 10:00 am. Removed the old EJ20 SOHC engine. Finished that part of the job at just after 11:00 am. Completed the EJ20 DOHC engine with the early EJ22 injectors (fit perfectly), fitted a flywheel with new top bearing and new pressure plate to the engine. Installed the engine in car. Finished at 13:00 hrs. Connected wiring, tightened exhaust (straight fit), engine mounts and installed all the hoses. Filled the cooling system with coolant. Attached the coil pack with tieraps to the duct between air flow meter and throttle body. Installed old, way too long high tension cords (old stock of Leone junk) and tried to fire her up. In the beginning, not much happening (God knows how long this engine had not been running) butter after 5 mins she ran, although not very smooth. Engine diagnostics showed problems with all injectors, with throttle position sensor and a few minor other glitches. Erased the memory and tried again, now only error code 35 (solenoid of HC canister, bugger :lol: ).

However, a major oil leak showed itself because there was one bolt missing from the valve cover, which was good, because I feared one of the front cam seals was bad. So put another screw in, everything fine.

Ready for first test drive. Done 200 metres, engine overheating. Drove back, thought thermostat would be stuck, so replaced it. Same problem. Engine temp continuously between 115 and 120 degrees when driving at 1200 rpm. Probably air in the system. Jacked up front of the car, let all water out and filled her up again. Problem solved.

Not much gain in torque, but very smooth and above 5500 rpm a lot of power!!! Too bad rev limiter kicks in at 6700 rpm.

So, all SOHC engines can be converted to JDM DOHC engines, as long as you keep the SOHC engine wiring loom, early EJ22 injectors (light grey) and use the cam and crank sensor that came with your engine. But be aware you cannot fit SOHC intake manifolds on DOHC engines because the bolt patern is different. I run a Legacy DOHC Turbo manifold, but you best use EJ25 DOHC manifolds, then you won't have a problem with throttle body and idle speed bypass valve. But again, use the original wiring loom.

Have fun.

[Edit] You can even see the valve cover bolt missing in the first picture I posted, :eek: !!!

I have two JDM EJ20Gs available, and one complete front wiring harness(es) from a 93 USDM Legcay Turbo, with ECU. The engines had auto trannys, but they are gone now. If anyone is interested, you can contact me at corkysrocks@isomedia.com and I will tell them what I want for the setup.

You can also get yourself a set of DOHC heads and fit them to your SOHC engine (EJ20 / EJ22 / EJ25) - but beforehand check consequences for compression ratio. Belt idlers and pulleys are the same. Use DOHC timing belt. Also use DOHC intake manifold with appropriate injectors. BTW, MY99 and after intake manifolds do not fit to earlier DOHC heads and vice versa.

EJ20D is DOHC atmo with high compression ratio;

EJ20G/H/K/R are DOHC turbo with lower compression ratio;

EJ205/EJ207 are MY99 and after turbo engines.

Yes, some work still to be done, yesterday plug wire #1 fell out, still managed 200 kph though.

Josh, I'm just testing the water. I thought I'd try here first. I really dread the thought of shipping these. The last one I shipped costed over $500 to ship from Seattle, WA to Minnesota, and that was using his compnay account to get a rate reduction. I could cost as much to ship these as I am wanting for them.

There are people in seattle on the legacycentral bbs.

I hear ya though. Shipping stuff freight like that sucks.
