Guest smallwavesurfer
Hey everyone, I've got a rattleing noise from somewhere at the base of the shifter on my 98 manual trans Outback. I've checked and ruled out the heat shield. This noise, is independent of speed, and rpms. It rattles most in 3rd, and I can make it go away if I hold the base of the shift lever. Anyone get this? Find a solution? How hard is it to get the plastic and leather boot apart to look at the linkage at the base of the shifter. Any tips? Guest nuburu2
Jeff, You may want to check the shift bushings for tightness before you tear out the boot. To access them it's a trip under the car, after it's cooled somewhat, as they are near and above the exhaust. These should help; www.scoobymods.com/forums...readid=564 Glenn O
Guest rigfennid
My 97 5sp OB does that rattling too. You probably need to get under the pleather boot in your console and tighten the bolt & nut you see there. I'm going to Home Depot to get a rubber-backed washer to put in to help with losing tension over time, and more dampening.
