98 Forester Rear end help needed

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm changing rear bearings in a 98 forester. I need some help with breaking it down to get to the spindle.

1. I noticed they have no pins holding the cv axle on the stub shaft on the rear end. Is this correct?

2. How do I disconnect the cable parking brake?

3. Do these break down the same way a EA82 wagon does? you have to pull the inside of the axle first and then pound the outside out of the spindle?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This town sucks. No Where in town do they have a chiltons or a haynes manual for subarus newer than 1996.

1. Right. The stub slides into the differential and is part of the axle. It can be unclipped but for servicing just slide it out.

2. I usually dont need to, if I need slack I get some in the interior.

3. These are mostly like a front axle on the rear, theres not a stub on the outer anymore, you gain slack by unbolting an item off the rear suspension like you would on the front, and then slide the differential end off, then slide the axle thru the bearing.
