Yesterday my wife was hit by an truck in rush hour traffic. She must have been in the trucks blind spot, and the driver decided to change lanes. She was shaken up but OK. However, the car is not OK. Looks like I am going to need new doors on the drivers side. Any tips on dealing with the insurance company?

Thanks

It all depends. Does you policy cover rental? If so get one. If not push them for one. You are going to be without your car for a while. The car isn't totaled? Are you sure they won't total it out? Is the dealer going to do the repairs? All things to consider.

Glad to hear your wife is ok. I tried to throw mine under the wheels of a semi but she wouldn't let go of me. Guess I have to keep her.

That shouldn't actually matter. Since it wasn't her fault the other persons insurance would cover it. When I got hit in my Roo I didn't initially take the rental, but when I realized it wasn't my insurance that was going to pay it I got it.

Other than that just keep on the insurance company and the adjuster. They go by the Adjuster's initial assesment on whether to fix the car or total it, but at the same time the adjust usually won't even get on his knees and look under the car to see what damage is there. They give you the excuse that once it's in the shop the shop will call to get appoval on any damage not reported in the initial assesment. So keep that in mind if you plan on just getting a check and fixing it yourself.

And make sure they use OEM Subaru parts, not aftermarket.

If your insurance company is Progressive do not, I repeat DO NOT let one of their claims adjusters near your car. Get your estimates from an auto body shop.

You still have to let their claims adjuster look at the car. They won't pay the claim unless you do. The only exception being if the body shop is approved by insurance company then the adjuster is not needed.

Do not ever go to a "recommended" collision shop. Go to a collision shop of YOUR choosing.

"recommended" collision shops will take shortcuts.

Take the rental, even if you do not need it, this will get the insurance company to go after the collision shop, to hurry things along.

My 98 was in the shop for 6 weeks, mainly because it was a "postal" legacy with right hand steering, there was no replacement rack for the steering in the US.

Good point! I was in the same boat. Mine was a first delivery shipment STi that was only 29 days old when it got rear-ended. It took a little time to get the parts and fix it right. I had the dealer do it and they did a flawless job.
