Purolator oil filter: bad design?

I've checked into how the Purolator PureOne filter works and its bypass valve is on the bottom where large particles might collect, whereas others have that at the top. I still don't know if Subaru's OEM filter has the bottom bypass, if so I don't like that. I've thought of getting a Mobil1 filter which has the top bypass valve but I can't seem to locate a part number for it yet.

 

Seems a bad design to let dirty oil pass through unfiltered from the bottom.

 

Any opinions or remarks about this would be appreciated, especially if the Subaru OEM filter is same as Purolator.

Well, according to info I read, it can also open when the oil is cold and thick. A worst case scenario, then, since the sediment would be settled where that valve is at and then draw it in first thing when started. Also noticed it mentioned that some don't seal very well even when closed.

 

This is what new cars do to me. I start checking into every little thing. :)

I too found this webpage useful... I had a FRAM on both of my SUBE's and replaced them quickly. I found on eBay, someone selling the Nippon oil filters, apparently the old OEM for Subaru. I like them, they are about twice the weight of the FRAM's... (new in the box, no oil of course) I changed the oil and filter last week on my 01 Outback and drive about 1k so far (trip to NJ for work this week) and the oil on the dipstick is still golden. Can't complain about that...

Depends on whether they are for my Brat or Legacy. Oddly enough the Legacy filters are less. I'd have to look at my past bills but Brat filters came to just a little over $5 each in quantities of six; and Legacy filters came to just under $5 each in quantities of six. If I looked around, I could probably get them cheaper, but time is worth more than the money I would save. If you're interested in some, I could get more definite numbers for you, but your best bet would be Auburn Subaru here in Washington state. They sell online at ??? (odd, it's not in my Favorites list...I think it's www.1stsubaruparts.com or something like that). Their online ordering is awkward to navigate around but they have an 800 number and will extend online pricing (30% off list or more) if you call them. I'm not sure how they would ship, but you might get interested AK buyers together for a group buy and shipping might be more advantageous.

Hey Ed, what do cases of subaru filters cost? I have a hard time finding Purolator filters.

1stsubaruparts.com ROCKS! I found them last spring and order everything from them if I don't need it immediately. The phone order guy is really nice, and the prices are amazing. Shipping is not bad either. I can't remember what it cost last time, but it wasn't much, and I still saved a bunch over dealer cost here.

 

I'll go check with Continental Subaru here in Anchorage and see if we could get a volume discount. (Attn: northguy, torxxx, and the rest of the AK crowd, talk to me about this.)
