Hi everyone.

First time writing the board. I've just been told that the engine in my '97 LegacyGT probably needs to be swapped. Something major went wrong with the engine last week on the highway. The shop has done a preliminary investigation and has said that it's definitely something internal and major and it'll end up with a rebuilt being required. I'm a little hesitant to get the whole thing torn apart to find out exactly what went wrong, just to find out it's best to drop in a rebuilt in the end anyway.

I had the now famous head gasket problem, which was fixed about 8 months ago, but in retrospect I don't recall the dealership checking the bottom of the engine to see if any damage had occurred.

Right now I'm just trying to weigh my options. The shop has quoted me $3500 CDN for a rebuilt plus installation cost which will bring the total to about $5500 (which seems a little high to me even in Canadian dollars). Does that seem right to those of you who would know, and if it is right, is it worth doing and then having to address all the other maintenance costs that will start to arise (exhaust system, radiator, battery, etc..etc)? Or should I cut my losses and run (what's a '97 Legacy worth that is in good shape but minus one cylinder)?

Thanks for any advice.
