Guest traskw
Hey I was curious, why did Subaru discontinue the hill-holder? It is on our 92, and I remember it being available in 97, but our 2001 does not have it. When did they do away with it and why?
Guest Chris Roberts
I'm not sure when they did away with it altogether. It was available in some models until '94 or '95. It was a neat deal in mountainous areas, I guess it was one of those things that became to expensive to keep like the low range x-mission. Guest mfillion
Wasnt because of hydrolic clutch now ? Martin
Guest miksmi
Australian Outbacks have both hill holder and low range (!); see www.subaru.com.au/showroo...sp?carid=7 Maybe designing these for LHD vehicles or certification for the North American market is cost-prohibitive (Aussies and Japanese drive RHD). Guest traskw
It is a pretty neat feature, sure helps when driving up onto car ramps. My guess is that it was a cost effective based decision. The system was used here for 15 years, it worked perfectly, what other reason would there be?
Guest subyroo
I absolutely love my Hill-Holder feature on my MY00 Liberty, it sure as hell saves blinding the poor bugger behind you at night like when you have to sit on the brakes in a non-equipped vehicle at Traffic Lights on a sloping road and it also helps the "clutch riders" with manuals. It not only helps in getting on & off car ramps, it also helps when on sloping driveways etc. I couldn't imagine not having one in my next car. Guest miksmi
Peter, does your Aussie Liberty have a hydraulic clutch?
Guest traskw
I'm complaining to SOA, those cheap B@stards! Just Kidding, but really it was/is a nice feature to have at times, you don't notice it until it's gone.
Guest Subamike
Anyone heard of a hand brake? Mike.

Guest subyroo
yeah I have heard of a handbrake. But have you tried to get one off in a blind panic because the wanker behind you is honking his horn for you to get outa his way?? GIVE ME A HILL HOLDER ANY DAY handbrakes are a pain in the arse 95% of the time.
Guest RuDrew
From my understanding, the Hill Holder was never available with a 2.5 liter engine. Since all the U.S. Subarus except the WRX have a 2.5 liter engine now, none has a hill holder. I personally like the Hill Holder feature, but I heard that Subaru was the only car manufacturer to still include it. Thus, people switching from other makes aren't used to it and so don't miss it. Since manuals are much less popular now than in the past, it probably didn't make sense for Subaru to engineer it for the 2.5 engine. This way, they can keep the car's price the same or raise it, but it costs them less to design and manufacture the car. It also isn't too hard to use the clutch's engagement point and accelerator to start off on a hill, which you have to do with the Hill Holder anyway when you are for instance backing up hill from a stop. Guest traskw
Ha... Ha... Ha... Ya using the e-brake works real well, try it going up a set of car ramps and tell me how easy it is, no comparison.
Guest traskw
I don't miss it accelerating from a stop on a hill, I have had plenty of cars that did not have it. But I did miss it when driving up onto a pair of car ramps, if you are not careful you can drive right off the damn things.
Guest Subamike
Hey Subyroo when the bloke behind starts honking his horn and carrying on thats when you either get out of your car and slowly start walking back to his car glaring at the driver ,or if thats not your scene then just put the hazzard lights on and take a break lol. Mike.
Guest Martin90
i personally like the hill-holder most of the time... but there are times that i wish it wasnt' there. for example, off-roading and not making it all the way up some slick surface, causing you to hit the brake and put the clutch in... then if you need to back down this difficult slope, you can't just have it in 1st, being ready to get going back up or even in reverse because or the slow pace you are going at. so you need to go in neutral or the the hill-holder will engage and lock up the front wheels which sends you sliding in whatever directions the slope wants you to go. but i'm sure someone will come up with some witty remarks how people should just drive better or whatever. if that whole thing even makes any sense. Guest Huckster
All the Sub's I've had with the Hill Holder Feature had a cable activated clutch, the device could be modified to be used on a hydralic clutch, but I personally haven't seen a hydralic unit equiped with one. Guest subyroo
Subamike if I have to get outa my Red Roo and go back to another driver, "it would be in the best interests of their health - not to be there", I will definitely have something that they will not want to see by a long shot!!! I will at this stage just click on the hazard lights
