To reset computer, or not to reset?

Recommended Posts

96 Legacy 2.2 L 5-speed. Got the new cats, but I am chicken to try to reset the computer on my own. (I am NOT mechanically talented!! Black wire first? Red wire first? Sheet, which was it.... kaBOOM!!!!) If I just leave well enough alone, will the computer gradually reset itself?

I really want my gas mileage to move back up. My last tank was 19 mpg, which is better than 18 mpg before that, but not as good as the 24 mpg I was getting this summer.

Don't you just need to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer?

Just pull the negative terminal off the battery and let it sit for about 10 minutes, then re-connect it. Not much to worry about there.

Yep that is correct. Just disconnect the battery.

I will hope that one of the Grand Poobahs of Subarus will chime in but isn't there something about letting the car run without touching the gas at initial startup to reset the computer to new engine conditions? I have used the battery disconnect to erase codes on my 90 Loyale but read somewhere about this other technique around these boards.

Drive til warm. Park on level ground. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for thirty minutes. Re-connect. Start the engine, and let it idle until up at normal operating temperature. Stop the engine. PRESTO!

Warming the engine first cuts down in the idling time later. Doing it on level ground ensures oil flow.

The reason for idling til warm is simple: The ECU ignores some sensors, O2 for instance until the engine is fully warmed up.
