green to coil -
black to ground
red to +12v
white to lighting circuit, optional
may be different

and it should have 3 spade connections in the back that are 4,6,and 8 cylinder and just place the wire onto the 4cyl spade
that is going by memory here cause it has been like 6 years since I had a VDO tach and sure wish I pulled it when I sold my bug cause it was like 2 inches dia

someone dissmissed it the first time I pointed it out when we saw a pic of a blown up EA-81 sedan or wagon that was a palistinian leaders transportation

then again looking at yours and then my 83 wagon (it's in the sig) looks like a marker light but mine is in the bumper instead of above it
