2001 Forester 2.5, automatic. I had the diagnostic done and I know now there are two. The guy told me the one i needed was the forward one by the catalytic converter? So I bought the part, bought the special socket wrench. Looked under the hood and for the life of me, I cant see where it goes. And the thing is, my boyfriend looked under the car and found the one aft, and he said it looks like the one we bought, however, according to the salesman, the one we need (and bought) was the one that goes up forward.

Did he sell us the wrong one? Or am I not looking in the right place? I have scrolled the boards, but cant find on the forester where this goes? Is it in plain view? PLEASE HELP, i am tired of the smell and crappy acceleration and my engine light being on!!!

thank you

The front 02 sensor (air/fuel sensor) is located in the front section of the front catalytic convertor , just below the inner c/v joint on the right side . The wire should be attached to a wire strap that is connected to one of the transmission studs .The connector is right buy the main harness just below the air filter housing on the right

Hope that helps

the part they gave us was a bosch but there are so many numbers printed on the box so i will give you a few. on the bar code it has numbers106495441.Then on the front it has: 13036 OXYGEN, SKU#19370260, BARCODE#58076

We got our at Advance Auto Parts, around here they are much better than autozone and always have the subaru parts I need in stock or can get it in one day.

  • 5 weeks later...

I too have a 2001 forester (just a few months out of warranty) and for the second time in the last 5,000 miles the O2 (front) sensor is beginning to deteriorate. I have taken it to the dealer thinking this part would be covered by extended warranty, no such luck. I am fairly adept at wrenching, but am clueless about replacing this thing myself. I read the earlier post desribing where to locate the sensor, and I have to admit, it is not abundantly clear where and what I should be looking for. Would the person who posted the ealier message asking a similar question please tell me if they were successful in replacing this part. As well, does any know of a manual, or set of instructions I can get my hands on to help out with this.

Any direction is appreciated.

Thanks - Ryan

First, are you sure you want to do it yourself, especially since the access is very hard unless you have a lift (this is why you are not finding it easily)?

Second, there was a recall on the sensor, so why don't you ask to do have it done under the recall.

Third, if it is indeed true that the sensor goes bad in 5000 miles, you have other problems than need to fixed first. I believe there was a ECU reprogramming recall on some cars from 00-01 or so.

I am not trying to be harsh but I did replace some good parts in my old cars cuz I did not trableshoot them well. Let me tell you: t is not cost effective.
