SubaruDave Posted November 7, 2004 Share Posted November 7, 2004 I installed new front OEM rotors and brake pads today on a 2003 Legacy L. I used the anti-squeal lube on the shims, but after installation I still have a very noticable squeal from the right front brake. Squeal starts when brakes are applied, stops shortly after release. The caliper appeared to be in good shape and the I regreased the release pins before reassembly. Any ideas or suggestions on what I may have done wrong would be appreciated! Hti-Johnson - Yes, I cleaned the pads and rotors before installation and then wiped the rotors down again after install. This is the first time I have ever had this problem. Thanks for the reply and this board is pretty neat. I have already found several useful hints and ideas. Thanks again! Whenever I put new pads on I always put anti-squeal on the back of the pads as well as the shims. Usually there are no problems, not sure why there is this time. May pull the pads and try again. By that I mean the procedure one is supposed to follow (but few do) where you get the car up to about 25 MPH and come to a very firm (not close to lock-up) stop repeatedly, fifteen to twenty times? This should be done on new pads right away to avoid developing a glaze on the pads that may result in squealing. timn29 Posted November 8, 2004 Share Posted November 8, 2004 I had the same problem with my '98 OBW. New pads, turned rotors and anti-squeal goo between the the back of the pads and the shims and between the shims and the calipers. I never got rid of the the squeal for more than 2 days...it kept coming back. I, then, removed the pads and scuffed the rotors, still squealed. Finally I did some calling around and found Wagner Thermo-Quiet pads (the ones that I was nursing were Raybestos...cheap). So I replaced the pads with the Thermo-Quiets and MAN!!! what a difference. They're so quiet and smooth. They weren't that much more expensive, but definitely a great inprovement. You might give those a shot...good luck.
