Hey,

I got a 1992 Subaru L Series Wagon, with the standard EA82 engine in it. What I am hoping to do within the next twelve months is replace it with an EJ20 (WRX engine), and I am just trying to find out what I need, how much it will cost and how I am going to get it all done. I have heard about a few other people who have done it, and also guys that are doing it. If anyone knows anything of relevance let me know! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Well I guess either Eric Witte or myself here in the states could help you, RXTurbo in Australia could. Eric is using a front cut to do his transplant, I am using just the engine and transmission , plus an aftermarket engine management computer. Unless you have more money then sense, this is not a task to be tackled by the average mechanic. I started with a $70 RX (by the way, the car was a steal, purchased at an auction), total funds now total over $4000.00 and the car isn't running yet, but getting pretty close. If at all possible, get a wrecked WRX to start with, but I'll bet that will cost more then I've sent already. Another option is to get a front cut from Japan or Australia, that should have most of what you'll need. The one thing it won't have is the turbo crossmember for the Loyal series wagon (EA82 series car), you will need that too.

May not help, but couldn't hurt, fill out your bio page, then we'll know where you are and maybe someone close can help you.

Yeah,

I can get hold of a front cut, they are A$4950 to get to my doorstep. What's the turbo cross member, and are they expensive? Basically I am aiming to learn as much as I can over the next 6-12 months, then think about actually doing this once I have saved some cash.

What kinds of things are involved in 'connecting' the new engine?

ur best bet would be to match it to a impreza drive train, maybe a wrx 4eat or 5 spd depending on what ur preferences are...when u get into that u have to worry about fabricating some trans mounts, driveshafts, a new rear, etc...

alternatively there are people out there making ea/ej series adaptor plates for the bell housing mounting bolts...

It would be better to get a front cut from a Legacy RS. Re-wiring will be a nightmare. Use the engine, tranny and rear diff, but use the driveline from your car, it will need the front drive shaft shortened 55mm or about a 2 1/8 inches. The transmission mount, if you are in the USA (and I see that you are in Australia) you can use an tranny mount out of and XT6 to start with, remove the piece that bolts to the tranny and drill holes to match the tranny mount of the RS tranny. The rear diff will bolt right in, no problem.

The person making the EA to EJ adapter has been working on it for years and doesn't seem any closer then he did a years ago.

Best bet it to get with Brett from Back Yard Boys (BYB) and RXTurbo, they can help you a lot.

Well on the tranny mount I found out the rear WRX tranny X-member works perfect. I just need to do something about the front mount since the WRX one is far far too wide to bolt to the car.

Lots of silly little things need fabrication too. The loyale shifter support doesn't bolt up in any way "stock" and the WRX one only kinda works since its not only still too long, but the rear body mount is different.

Pedals need to be out of a LHD suabru with a hydraulic clutch. This basicly limits you to buying a pedal box out of a legacy turbo or a EJ-25 powered car.

Hey Eric, my shifter bolts into the stock location, I had to shorten the rods between it and the shifter though.

Mine atleast the "support" rod's front mount was far to wide. Did you change the shifter mount plate on the back of the tranny?

Shifter mount plate on tranny???? The only place my shifter mounts to the tranny is the link from the lever to the shift linkage at the back of the tranny. There is a link the runs from the shift plate (the piece the shift lever ball end goes into) to the back of the tranny, and then that plate mounts to the top of the driveline tunnel in it's original spot. Here are the links compare to original.

Ok, the one on the top is the piece I am talking about. The mounting point the farthest away from the shifter base is the section that is too wide on mine. As in there isn't any threads visible even before the spring plate is put on.

I used the EA82 stifter stuff. I have a shifter from a WRX, but after looking at the two and the car, I went with the EA82 stuff.
