1991 Subaru Legacy won't start!

Recommended Posts

Hi there I'm hoping someone can help with this problem.

This car has 83000 miles on it and I have never had a problem with it. Check engine light came on sometime ago but my mechanic couldn't determine why.

Then it stalled one day but I was able to get it home-we replaced the fuel filter, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor and the spark plugs.

Any ideas what else could be wrong?

One thing I've learned working on these cars: pull the codes before you randomly start replacing stuff. Just guessing at the problem won't do you any good.

Did you check the alternator and battery? If you suspect you have no spark, also check the coilpack and igniter.

I pulled the codes, and came up with code 11 (crankshaft position sensor). We have replaced the crank, and cam sensors, and it started up right away afterward. as soon as we shut off the engine and tried to start it again it would just crank. Same codes generated (11) We have also replaced the plugs and wires, and I will be checking the coil tonight. It appears to have no spark at the plugs at this time. My thought is it may be the ignitor? or the coil? I know I can check the coil, but am not sure how to test the ignitor if it is good or bad. It seems to follow a pattern, it will (sometimes) start when it is stone cold, but as soon as the engine warms up at all it won't start.

Thanks for your speedy input...

Pulling our hair out here!

Please describe the symptoms more. Does it crank over? Is there no spark to plugs? No power at all? Did you attempt to recover codes?
