CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHICH CARS HAVE THE LSD THAT WOULD FIT MY 81 WAGON? I KNOW THERE WAS ALOT OF LSD ACTIVITY ON THE SELL BOARD RECENTLY, AND I WOULDNT MIND GETTING ONE IF I COME ACROSS ONE IN A JUNKYARD SOMEDAY. THANKS

I got my LSD from a 1988 AWD sedan, it was a GL10! It did have the automatic overdrive trans though. The gear ratio was 3.70. So I will have to change the ring/pinion.

My GL-10 didn't come with a LSD and it has 3.90 gears. Were all GL-10's supposed to come with a LSD or was it an option?Or is my car just messed up?Jimmer

Maybe I should be asking this question...

How can you tell if the differential is a LSD or not, without the car running?

Peek under the back of the car.Notice the rear differential and look at the tag on it.You may have to wipe it off to see it.If it is LSD it will say so in big letters.

These sites have some pretty good tips for LSD hunters. The Datsun 510 crowd and perhaps others seem to be competing with us in the quest for Limited Slippers. My '87 RX 3door has a 3.7 lsd.

(or if that link doesn't work try going here www.dimequarterly.tierran.../tech.html and then follow the link in the drivetrain section.)

www.dimequarterly.tierran...u.lsd.html (more of the same info)

www.spdusa.com/limited.htm (SPD Tuning Service also can get LSD's)

4wd.sofcom.com/A/Diff.locks.html (description of how diffs and lockers work)

To answer your question ANY LSD will bolt into your car. Just remove the axles and unbolt it from the sub frame as these frames are about 5" wider. You will need to match your current ratio, ie. 3.70 needs a 3.70, 3.90 needs a 3.90. Failure to follow this rule will result in the purchase of a new transmission as the transfer section of your trans will explode!

So what kind of fun happens if you don't adjust the backlash when you change the ring gears as that one website describes? And has anyone taken a LSD diff to a tranny shop to get the ring gear ratio changed? How much $$$ do they charge for this service?

Tim said he was quoted about an hours labor. I imagine it would depend on the shop. Premature wear of gears, and possible breakage in heavy 4WD situations.

One more vehicle to add to the donor list. 1986 GL 4WD wagon W/ 1.8 carbed motor and 5sp D/R. My brother in law's has the LSD in it. We don't know if it is stock or transplanted though!

My 88 GL-10 wagon has the rear LSD. I think it was an option for All cars in some years and later moved up to only an option on the high end models. The RX allways had ithem stock if I recall corectly. No idea on the XT having them

The lsd was a factory option, just like anything else. Most cars that have it probably got it as part of a package, like the GL-10, and AWD's. My '88 turbo had it, but my '87 carbed dual range has it too. I looked at the invoice for the car, and it listed the lsd on the sheet, but didn't have the prices. I'd like to know how much it cost originally.
