Subaru running rich!!!!!!!!!!! 98 Legacy

Recommended Posts

My 98 Legacy 2.2 auto. stinks from running rich! The exhaust will burn your eyes going down the road.

What if anything can I adjust to make it run leaner?

This car is computer controlled. This is not like an old carburetor that you could adjust the float level screws on. There is probably a sensor failure some where. O2 sensor or other causing the issue. Is your check engine light on?

Check engine light has been on for 2 years now. mainly due to the fact that when I did a motor change, the replacement motor did not have an EGR valve.

And no provision to mount mine in this motor. Mine was an automatic, the other a stick car. It came up with the code for EGR when I had a scan run.

I recently installed the motor harness from my original motor and installed the EGR vacuum switch so it would read the EGR. Ran great for a couple of days, then the light came back on and is running rich.................

I may have a no-win situation, but in 6 months the car is due for inspection, and now OB11 is part of the ritual. I hate the thought of still owing money on a car I will no longer be able to drive.......................

Any suggestions!

Have you pulled any codes?

Have you pulled any codes?

My son borrows a scanner, all that comes up is the same EGR code.

Problem is I can't keep borrowing the scanner.

He cleared codes last Sunday, test drove the car for about a half hour. The next day the light came back on again on the way home.................

Is any other sensor possibly faulty, as I saved all the sensors off the original motor...........

Not sure how to help you, but you are going to get this code. Assuming that the 2.2 is configured the same as the 2.5, you have a small pressure sensor mounted on the passenger strut tower. It tracks manifold pressure and atmospheric pressure and is one of the signals used by the auto tranny shift algorithm. As a secondary function, it "checks" the EGR operation. It looks for a change in the manifold pressure (vacuum) when the EGR is triggered. Since it doesn't see this change, it throws the code. Hooking all the 'stuff' back up won't help you. You'll still get the CEL. (I think it has to see a few consecutive failures, hence you may go a few days between CEL's.)

This sensor failed a couple years ago on my 97 OB. I got the EGR code as a result, but the EGR was actually fine. I did notice at the time that my shifting was a little delayed, almost like a bit of 'slip'. Once the sensor was changed, the shifting returned to normal. I did not have any other symptom really. No smell. If gas milaged suffered, it was extremely slight.

Good luck.

I have been getting a delay in shifting out of first, changed the fluid in tranny but no better. Didn't really think it was the trans as it waqs rebuilt 2 years ago.

Change the O2 sensors. Those usually controll the A/F mixture. My O2 (only have one in the 90 legacy) was bad and it gave me a CEL so I pulled the codes and then found a sweet deal on ebay for an OEM O2. I payed all of $60.00 and I could then breath again and I used alot less gas too. I used to go thru half a tank from my house to west palm beach (45 min) and now I use less than a quarter of a tank.
