What's a reasonable price for a clutch job on a 93 Legacy? It seems to have begun slipping in 5th gear (worn clutch?) and there is a tweeting noise in neutral that goes away if I slightly engage the clutch (throwout bearing?)... or is there a liquid additive that will cure these ills? Clutchrenew... Tweetnomore?

Kilashandra, I could do it for you for about 700 and parts, which would be between the prices that mattocs quoted for a local shop and the dealer ( I can get an Excedy clutch kit for about 230 which is the one Subaru uses as stock.) TYhe advantage of using me is that I come to you (I'm in N. Cal) and have done this before on my own Subie. PM me if interested.

Wow!!, I think my shop should raise our prices. We usually get $495 for the 95-99 vehicles, and $419 for the older ones. We use Exedy or Astugi depending on what was OE for the particular year. $40 more to have the flywheel turned but basically that is my cost.

Killashandra, I usually do not promote our shop on the board, but feel free to call and we can talk and see if our Subaru shop fits your needs. BTW we are located in Portland.

I had gotten one quote from a local shop of $395 to $495 and then I called Firestone to check with a chain and they quoted me $700+. I actually got a referal to you from someone else, but Unfortunaley the clutch actually burned out and I think your shop is a little far to tow to. You're out by the airport right? I'm on SE Belmont and that would be a long tow. :( I'm glad to hear that the $700 quote was silly. I thought it might be.

killashandra, on the '91 MT there is an adjustment that you can use to loosen the clutch cable a bit so you can drive it to richierich's shop. It 's toward the back of the engine compartment, on top of the engine in the middle. you need a 10mm and a 12mm wrench (the cable has two nuts that lock together) they need to be unlocked from each other and then you can loosen the cable (the larger nut) about a half dozen turns and lock the nuts back together. richierich can give you a much better price than I could, it seems, and I would have to drive up from CA to do the work (which is a large part of the reason for the price).
