Keyless entry control unit

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

I’ve a 98 Impreza outback. Just like many others, I replaced my battery and found out about the “security system” causing my lights to flash & draining my battery. I read in here about resetting the system with the remote key switch (That I don’t have) or pressing the button under the dash. I looked and looked but could not find the button. What I did find was two brown leads coming off the 18 pin connector harness of the Keyless entry control unit that had a little metal end to it but no button. Looks to me like the button should have been there but someone was messing with the system before (previous owner) and removed it. Anyhow, I disconnected the 18 pin connector and the flashing stopped. I then removed the entire control unit and everything works just fine. My question is, what have I unknowingly done? That huge control unit must control something more than the keyless entry system, otherwise it would not be there. Maybe that is all it does control but my intuition tells me otherwise. If the two brown leads are where the button belongs, could I connect a button to them and have everything back to normal?
