Timing Belt Replacement 97 Imprezza

Recommended Posts

Another timing belt question! Pertains to 1997 Imprezza wagon, 2.2 L engine. Should it be replaced at 60k and at 105k? I have a confession to make - car has 93k and belt has never been replaced.

Repair shop says Subaru changed recommendation and now should be done at 105k - but from reading the threads, am I correct in saying this is for models 2000 and later because belt made out of different composition?

What additional service should be done at the same time the belt is replaced (I won't be doing the work myself)-

oil seal replacement and water pump? Cost estimate? Subaru's 90K recommended service has just been completed.

Thanks

For a 97 I would replace the TB at 60K. While you have it off you should replace the waterpump, cam seals, crank seal, oil pump seals, tighten the oil pump screws (on back of pump), replace tensioner and idler pulleys. Hope this helps. If you choose to do these you will get many more miles out of your car. I have 239K on my 90 legacy (same engine) and it is running pretty good.

Thats is a great price on the belt. Please post a price for TB plus crank, cam, and oil seals as well. All things that need to be addressed with the 2.2 engine.

I can not stess to you enough the importance of those seals. If any of them go you will have to pull the belt off again. Do them now so you don;t have to do it later.
