For the last several months when I use the wipers, I periodically get a CLUNK sound as the wiper makes it's sweep. To me it sounds like the springs in the wiper arms. It doesn't happen every time the wipers are used but maybe 1 out of 10 wipes they make the noise. The wiping action is not effected by this problem; I just don't like the noise. I'm going to try some WD-40 on it and see if it stops. A friend thought it might be the gearing  in the wiper. Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome.

In every car I have ever worked on, there has been one wiper motor (usually attached to the left wiper) with a linkage to the other blade. Often these linkages consist of several rods, with articulate as needed. My guess is that one of these joints is loostening up, and what you hear is a momentart catch of the rod on something, and the clunk is when it releases. . .

Thanks for the information. That's basically what my friend said.

Today I gave the spring in each arm, the point where the arm flexes and the point where the arm bolts to the motor a shot of PB Blaster. It's a cleaner and lubrication. It seems to have done the trick. It's been raining all day in Philly and I have only heard the noise once. When the weather clears I am going to give the wipers another dose.
