WRX Clutch discovery!

So i laid out a stock 4WD EA82 flywheel, clutch disc and presure plate. Then...I took this WRX stock clutch...and compared. It WILL fit perfectly into the 4WD flywheel, and onto the presure plate perfectly, and the discs appear to be nearly the same thickness, and the splines are the same on both transmissions.

However, the pres plate and flywheel on the EJ stuff is entirely different than EAxx stuff....a comparrison on that stuff is next...!!

so the wrx disc slides onto the awd/4x trannies? and its an 8 7/8 disc... but nearly the same thickness is a big deal. nearly? your sayin no theory, but fact?

 

dont say fact till your runnin it. or you actualy measure both thicknesses.

 

not everyone is prepared to have their flywheel machined, and it would suck to have peepl buy clutches they cant use =]

After thinkin bout this for a few minutes.. I'm wonderin exactly why this is a good thing for us old gen folks. Since its the same size and all, what mechanical advantage would it give us? So we have another option in selecting a clutch disc.. it doesnt matter too much if we dont have the pressure plate to put some more stick to it.

 

Now the new gen kiddies have it good. Instead of having to pay $150 for a disc just because it says WRX on the package, they can pay $35 for an EA82 disc if they're cheap like me.

 

Or am I talking out of my bum again? I dunno.. I need more caffiene so I can think this out..

The disc IS a few MM more is total DIAMETER than the EA82, but it fits perfectly into the flywheel and pres. plate.

 

The thickness is the two discs are nearly identical. i just need to find two NEW ones and measure them.

 

This will give us old skoo folks clutch options, kevelar, ceramic, carbon fiber, and stuff like that....where as clutchnet is the only source ive seen for 'direct fit' clutches for the EA82/81/71/63 stuff...

 

We can get a presure plate from them as well. Im still going to investigate ALL options of this EJ AWD clutch stuff into the EA82 4WD stuff.

I will caution you guys on one thing.

 

I don't know too much about the old gen stuff, but as far as the new gen stuff, there are two types of clutch setups. A push style and pull style clutch. All the turbo'd cars got the pull style clutch, while the n/a cars got the push style clutch. I don't know if you can differentiate by just looking at the pressure plate or not.

I know some guys were looking into swapping the WRX clutch & pp onto a turbo legacy. Everything bolted up, except the wearing surface on the turbo legacy flywheel was slightly smaller then the WRX setup.

 

So unless they did something extremely different for the old gen stuff, I would assume it would be similar.

Yes, I can tell by looking to see if pull/push actuation. I know the WRX/STi has that.

 

The EA82 stuff is smaller...by a TAD on diameter, but the disc still fits into the flywheel perfectly.

 

I know that Im not going to be using the new gen pres.plate/flywheel combo unless something very interesting comes up...and I ESPECIALLY wont be using the pull type...as our setups are push obviously.

 

IIRC, the 2.5 RS and stuff like so, clutch discs and flywheels are interchageable...its the 6MT-STi stuff that gets iffy and supposidly not interchangeable with everything else.

Yeh I had observed a while back that the discs were compatible, but our problem isn't the disc its the pressure plate..and while it is possible to machine the flywheel to accept the ej pressure plate I dunno how this will effect the ring gear as it won't be mounted on much material and whether the flyweel would have 2 be shimmed in order for the ej pressure plate 2 make contact with the throw-out bearing on the release fork 2 maintain correct stroke..

The pressure plate shouldn't be a problem anymore since you can get one from clutchnet that is 50% stronger than the XT6 pressure plate for I think $225. And if that isn't enough, you can ask them to make you one of their Laser Cut diaphragms that is supposed to be much stonger. Its all about how much money you got in your wallet now.

you have to make an adapter for the bellhousing that is 12mm thick to equalize the offset for the clutch setup. you use the EA82 flywheel with the holes drilled outwards a little to match the EJ crank. use your favorite EA82 clutch. there is a lot of info on this to be found in Retrofitting. look for subarino's thread.

this is a little OT. im still figurin out how all the little bits and pieces of cars fit and work together, but i think i have this figured out. the throwout bearing (4?) pulls the pressure plate away from the clutch when the #10 piece pushes on #5. is that the gist of it?

so Will, any updates yet? Its getting close to pulling the motor out of the RX and doing a manual swap and I don't wanna replace the clutch in a month after I get it done with my new hoodscoop, TMIC, TD04, WRX downpipe with hollowed cats, MS&EDIS setup, oh and the cams I'm gettin from ya as well...... might have some problems with it if don't hold to what you have....

the WRX stuff WILL fit and work. I have NOT tested the holding power of any of it. Better be safe and go with the clutchnet stuff. If the price is right I will be getting a 3 puck SPT WRX clutch (the dealer performance stuff thats outragious in $...but I get it for ALOT cheaper... :banana: ).

so the WRX pressure plate will work is what you're saying and not just the disc? Hmmm time to work some major overtime. Mwahahaha intercooler and hoodscoop on their way right now and the turbo will be here the first of the year. Then the WRX downpipe will be installed and the major mods will keep coming! w00t!!! I'm excited!!!

That would be awesome if we could put those cool new high-tech clutch materials in our cars, but I'm still wondering about one thing. I don't know much about clutches, but I would guess that these new ceramic and kevlar discs would need increased pressure to function, so wouldn't net a whole lot of gains without a beefed-up pressure plate. Is there a source for either a later-model plate that will bolt up or a way to modify our old school ones with heavier springs?

Well, I've just been over the Clutchnet.com, and in their online catalog they have no listing for any EA series cars. This sucks, my clutch is slipping and I want a performance replacement! :banghead: I sent them an email to see if they still carry them and I'll let everyone know what I find out.
