99 Outback Foglamp Question

Recommended Posts

I just got a 99 Outback and the fog lamps are shattered (I knew this going into the deal)

Since Factory lights are $100 a pop and Hella lights are like $70.00 a pair.....

Will those fit into my 99 outback without too much major science?

My opinion is that the Hella's are better. Their reflector and light broadcast pattern (?) is far better than the stock lens. The Hellas are really durable too. Don't know how many arms and legs it would take to put those on your car. Since you've got the factory wiring in place, then you've got half the job done already. You'd just have to find a suitable way of mounting the lights.

Good luck!

Our '03 TS did not come with any fog lights (thanks Subaru accountants!) but that's o.k. since it was easy to add better ones for less than $100.

A lot of this writeup above won't apply to you, but maybe it will help. It shouldn't be very hard to make some sort of bracket to mount these on your Outback. I'd do it if mine ever got damaged, the Hella 500 fogs are indeed better than the stock OB fogs. Make sure you get what you want though, there are DRIVING and FOG variants with very different patterns. The fogs are a very wide pattern but only suitable for lower speed driving, they're worthless for lighting the road ahead at high speeds since they don't shine out very far. They are in fact helpful in fog and twisty roads where you want a wider pattern.

OTOH on one of my Hella's, there is a vertical crack in the lens and they're only a year old... my OB fogs have no cracks and are 8 years old. Not sure when the Hella one cracked, but at least the lens is replaceable should I decide to do that. So far it still works fine.

Try rallylights.com they are Susquhena Motorsports a Hella distribtor, I know that have some brackets for mounting Hellas in the OEM positions at least for the STI cars.

I still have the mounting brackets from the Busted lamps that werre on my car. I heard that one type of Hellas will bolt right into my brackets and then right into place, I just need to find someone who has done it to confirm it heh.
