Putting clutch : Grease on transmission shaft main spline ?

Recommended Posts

I am putting in a new clutch.

Subaru manual says put grease on transmission shaft main spline.

Just to clarify, do they mean the collar or snout (where throw out bearing rides), or do they mean the splined (grooved) surface in front of the collar or do they mean both.

If I put grease on splined surface, could grease not get into clutch disc front the splined hole. I understand grease is a NO, NO on clutch disc.

What I do when I do a clutch is to clean off the collar that the throughout bearing rides on, make sure the groove in the bearing is packed before you put it on.

Then take the clutch disk, smear a little grease in the inside of the splined area, slide it over the input shaft, while it is on there take a rag and wipe the excess off, slide it back off and clean the outside of the spline area on the clutch disk.

This puts a small amount of grease on the splines, but not enough to get on the disk.
