removal of antenna from outback wagon 97

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I'm trying to remove and replace the power antenna from my 97 outback wagon.

It's stuck in the down position. There's a chrome cone that the top of the antenna is sitting in.

I'm not sure what to do next? The chrome antenna is pretty flush and featureless except for one small hole. Does is screw off? Pry off?

Do you even mess with the chrome cone? Or do you remove the antenna from the bottom without messing with the chrome cone?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

A new antenna shoudl come with a new chrome cone, so might be aloowed to mess this one up. However, i would buy the antenna first to make sure of that. Also, the new cone may not fit properly so doule check that as well.

Oh, and it should screw off, at least that was the way mine worked for the mitsubishi antenna i replaced.

jmilum,

The chrome top will unscrew. You'll have to use a small bladed screwdriver that you don't particularly care about, and putting the blade in the slot on the ring, drive it with a hammer blow, sufficiently enough to move the ring a bit anticlockwise, without having it slip off and scratch up your paint. Keep it up until you can unwind the ring with your fingers. Everything else is done from inside the car. Pull the drain tube from the bottom of the antenna assembly and leave it there (much easier to put back on when reinstalling), unhook the wiring connector, undo the two 10 mm bolts holding the assembly to the mounting bracket, pull the entire assembly down out of the exit hole in the top of the quarter panel, and remove it from the car. Good luck!
